I am thinking of converting my primaries to electric so that SWMBO can get the genoa in a bit more easily. Is a single speed winch good enough or is the extra cost of the two speed worth it.

Will I need to increase my battery capacity, currently 2 x 120aH service.

Any advice on fitting also wlecome

Chris, you've probably looked at it but just in case! Have you checked out bigger winch handles, particularly those with the big knobs on the handle ends (forgive my verbal description!). When we chartered they had them and SWMBO was seriously impressed, made a big difference from our own little Titan ones!

battery capacity

very unlikely you will need more. my electric anchor windlass draws 100A but only for a couple of minutes so the capacity needed to cover it is 3AH. a sheet winch will be used for an even shorter time. just make sure all the cabling is heavy enough and a suitable size breaker is fitted.

i'm in favour of anything that helps the ladies enjoy sailing

My Dehler 36 CWS has an electric Harken two speed winch centrally in front of the wheel, it was standard - CWS Central Winch System. The main problem you might find is accomodating the motor underneath. Also need very heavy cables of the kind used as engine starter of fork lift motor wires which is what I used when I fitted an electric anchor windlass. I think the dimensions are on the Harken web site. Lewmar also make them.

You can also luff up to ease the strain on the sheet. Perhaps not an option when racing, but who cares if you are cruising.
