I am no fan of electric cars / boats etc, however small outboards are unreliable and if only used it for short distances to / from shore then it is probably worth a look. for anything else you are in the same position as cars - lots of money, charging and poor range!

What are you looking for an electric outboard to do - eg power a low speed tender, high speed RIB or motor yacht? Very different propositions.
As ever, electric motors are great - simple, quiet and generally cheap. It is the batteries etc which are the expensive bit, and the required speed and range are key to whether economically viable or not.
Also above about 15kW power sizes start to need high voltage (above 48V) which, combined with salt water, means need very professional approaches to design, implementation and often for any maintenance.

Depends on what you consider poor range - if we’re not in a hurry we can comfortably get 20+ miles on a charge - the computer says over 30 but not tested that. Can’t do that with my petrol outboard. Yes you can top up the petrol, but you can also carry a spare battery. Not cheap though and you need the charging infrastructure.
