Does anyone have any experience of using an electric oil extraction pump? Was it any good and do you have a web link?
I should perhaps add that I have a Pela Extraction pump but I've never really found it to be that good. I've never actually used it on my current engines but when I used it on KAD32's it took an eternity to get the hot oil out of the sump. I reckon the oil will be stone cold by the time I get all of the oil out of the my current engines (TAMD63p's) and even if I did use the Pela, I'd still have to decant the extracted oil into a large waste vessel because it only hold about 6.5 litres.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I bought one for about £20 off ebay some while ago.

They need nice hot oil to work. It is slow but I have 20 lts per engine so I can at least dump it into one container!

BUT ..... make sure you attend it all the time . If the tube slips out you will pump oil everywhere. Naturally a man of my stature, mechanical prowess and overall engineering foresight has never experienced this ( cringe - pinnocio...and god can it create a mess quickly!).

Finally don't be tempted to use it to suck out water from the blige. The pump head is metal and needs oil passing to lubricate it.

Mine was branded "Manesman" I think but they will all come from the same factory in China I assume.

Since 1991 I have used an old jabsco water puppy, with a nitrile impeller & connect it to my hand sump pump outlet, hang pump over container.

just hold the pump handle up, after a couple of strokes to get it running, job done. It has used 2 impellers in that time.

pump into spare container. (usually the one from the oil change before, or the general oil use one)

on VolvoPauls advice I bought a jabsco water puppy too. pumps out really quick with warm oil and its great for refilling again - wish i bought it years ago

either a tube down the dipstick pipe or if you have one a pump out connection usually on the sump where the dipstick pipe goes in. Its a short piece of pipe with a flare and a bolt in the end. Also either take the dipstick out when pumping or open the oil filler on top of the engine - lets air in faster and oil out easier
I dont think you will get much out if you connect to the dipstick tube alone

Having seen how effective the professional style vacuum pump my engineer uese was, I replaced the round 6l vacuum pump with one of the larger cylindrical ones.

I have to pump out 10l of oil from 2 engines and it is really fast, even with the oil only luke warm. Have used it on cars and for sucking out bilge water

Ive used one of these for the last 10 years http://www.force4.co.uk/1947/Force-4-Oil-Changer-12V.html

warm engines best.
prime by putting pipe in fresh oil can (wastes about and egg cupful)
Just need a 25L oil drum ready to fill.

I do the oil change from the inspection hatches with carpets in place very quick and clean.
Just make sure the delivery tube is clipped into the 25L waste drum, you dont want that coming out.

Also you can refill the fresh oil with the same pump with zero mess.

How do you change the filters, presumably you do change them at the same time?

I have three inspection hatches .

I use a bag (fresh bin bag) to drop each filter in, bag then placed into a bucket before being carried over the carpet.

To be honest it is easier to roll the carpet back and take the floor up but it takes about 5 mins to do it and put it back BUT once the floor is out crew cant really get in/out the saloon hence the floor and carpet stay in place.

Aha, that makes sense. Moving soft furnishings can be a right pita!

Ballpark figure- how long to remove a sump full and how much does the sump hold?

I have one of those cheap ebay ones for £15.

The instructions warn you not to use hot oil, however it would not work at first. Therefore I decided I had nothing to loose by heating up the oil to quite hot. It then worked perfectly and I have used it for a number of engine and gearbox (Car) applications without problems

both engines inc filters take about 26 L

25L waste oil drum is almost full.

I expect about 10L is sucked out of each engine.

My engines have a bespoke pipe fitted with a screw top.

The exit pipe is a thin pipe but it comes out under pressure, never timed it but it fills about as quick as filling a 25L drum from a domestic water tap , you dont have time to get bored !

NB the oil comes out under pressure, as the waste drum fills the pressure can shoot the pipe out the drum, hence I say fasten the pipe to the drum.

Thanks all
Reckon I'll have one of these little jobbies
