What size anchor windlass do we need for my boat. Some websites say cheapo 450w job is more than adequate but others claim that 1000w is still bit marginal.Plough anchor and 8mm chain.Lewmar advise weighing whole kit and applying some x3 formula or other.
Need to bear in mind that mooring in more than 10 fathoms is very unusual round here and in the past have handled all ground tackle recovery by the armstrong method.

at the very minimum you want a 500w windlass running 8mm chain, at least 30metres. We supply our 30ft range with 1000w which is more like it.

I would go for 1000w ..never know what you might drag up with the anchor...that said..you prob know but you will need the chain to pass round the (s*1t forgot the name so ill call it a sprocket) sprocket at least 270 deg or it will bounce and your hook will start knocking chips out of your sharp end.

Thanks all,for info.Verticle or Horizontal.?

This is to replace damaged S & L Hyspeed.
OK.So min 1000w it is.
Will vertical or horizontal make any difference?
Have loads of room with at least 30" of drop into chain locker.

Personally, I think that the anchor winch, in fact the whole anchor system, is a belt and braces item which should be oversized rather than undersized.

Re: Thanks all,for info.Verticle or Horizontal.?

depends where you mount it..if you fit a vertical close to the deck you tend to slap with the chain hitting the deck between gypsy (thanks cliff)and bow roller...
