I've been buying and selling on Ebay for a while now with a 100% positive feedback score of 80 ish.

BUYING.

Just use your common sense.

Decide what you want to pay and don't get caught up in a bidding war just because you don't want to be beaten by the other bidders.

If you badly want to win an item, leave bidding til the last few mins and don't forget to refresh the page you are viewing to see if you have been out bid.

If possible pay by paypal or other card methods, but beware of surcharges.

If you have to pay by cheque, send it by recorded delivery so you can prove delivery.

ONLY deal with those who have good feedback.

SELLING.

Pictures and descriptions sell stuff.

I prefer to take paypal and state this in my blurb. But people can dispute payments and there is a cost involved with paypal... but it's quick and easy.

Always despatch via a service that requires a signature.

Prepare to be amazed at how much you can sell your old rubbish for.

Jim

Re: I got a negative feedback

If there was a reserve on that item it would say Reserve not met, by the current bid, so you're right - no reserve. In which case, the vendor has agreed to sell that piece of kit for whatever is the highest bid.

Given there' still more than six days to go, I expect the bids to go much higher. There's always a flurry of activity in the last hour or two on good kit [which is often when people fry their reality chip!]

The import charges and duty are something you need to think about. His promise to refund you any that you are charged is probably unenforceable so only worth as much as the vendor is honourable. The only way to avoid such charges is probably to misdescribe them, and it's up to you to decide whether you want to be a party to that - misdescribing the goods wouldn't be your offence, but Customs would probably say that evading the import duty was - and there would probably be financial penalties that would follow. That is, of course, if they ever found out. Check the feedback and those leaving feedback, see if many are from the UKK - I think you can do that by clicking on thier names. That will give you some idea of whetther this 'scheme' works.

That apart, you would also need to be sure that the kit is going to work here in Europe. A lot of the cheap VHF radios on ebay are rubbishy US ones that are not EU approved, and some of them seem not even to be type D. I don't know about the raymarine C80 that you're interested in, but you need to be sure.

Thanks all for the great advise yet again.

I'm not interested in the purchase of the C80, only as an example to follow.

Although they are a great piece of kit to have on board.

I believe that if you pay using Paypal the money is not debited till the goods are despatched. Also, I believe that you have redress using this method if something goes wrong with the deal. I think.

Not true, goods are not dispatched until payment is received by seller regardles of how you pay. Paypal is safest way to pay as you have benefit of their protection scheme.
I have made over 100 trades on eBay all bar one have been very good, as always feedback is everything - beware buyers with zero feedback.

Most boaty stuff is in:
Automotive:Other Vehicles:Boats & Watercraft
Automotive:Other Vehicles: Parts & Accs:Boats & Watercraft

Biggest risk on eBay is addiction!

No, when someone pays me by Paypal, I see that the money has gone through and then dispatch the item. Paypal don't have any control of when anything is dispatched.

I wouldn't hold out much hope of Paypal helping you out either - unless something is clearly their fault. I've often wondered about the small claims court for chasing people who don't pay or don't deliver. The Ebay deal constitutes a contract so you should be able to pursue them that way - if it is worth the 20 quid or so it cost to file a claim.

That said, if bought and sold around fourty items on Ebay and never had any trouble.

I have found ebay brilliant for selling and buying. No real problems, occasionally I get an idiot buyer that hasn't read the terms of my sale properly or just time wasting but on the whole everything works well.

Never pay by bank transfer or Western Union - IMHO

User ID's are regularly hijacked so while you think you are dealing with a member with good feedback - you could be dealing with a crook.

I nearly got caught out last year when a seller with great feedback wanted the cash wired to a bank and wouldn't take any other payment method - luckily I got 5 e-mails from other members who tipped me off rhat he had stolen an identity

Paypal is really the only way to be safe - and you have some recourse if things do go wrong,

btw never hold your breath while waiting for e-bay management to respond to e-mails and I'll send a bottle of red to fhe first forumite who can post a valid UK contact telephone number!

Re: I got a negative feedback

There is a trick which normaly works to find the reserve price:

Go to the ebay item and copy the exact description. Now go to google.com and paste the item description into the search box. Perform the search. Very often, the search returns a link to the ebay item and amongst the gobbledegook are 2 prices..........current bid and reserve.

It works honest. It's useful to know if the item is worth tracking.

Here's a good example of people not reading the description fully - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1297&item=2487327663&rd=1
