Dylan hits the big time

I have to admit that I was bit disappointed that Dylan was copyrighting other peoples' work - not so much that he was using it but that he was sticking his own copyright statement on it.

Then on top of that I was put off by the hard sell. Inverkip is outside my price bracket too, but I just keep my boat somewhere cheaper. KTL has changed a lot since the early days in a small cheap boat with people just chipping in occasionally. I've chipped in in the past, but since the hard sell I just decided it was fairer if I just didn't watch the films any more.

Nevertheless Dylan, welcome back to the forum.

Lies? What lies? It was very nice cocoa, by the way. Thanks. Have a song.

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a deckhouse saloon ?
My friends all sail Fishers, I must get one soon.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from iTunes,
So Lord, won't you buy me a deckhouse saloon ?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a pontoon at Kip ?
My budget won't run to a berth for my ship.
I'm stuck here in Suffolk, the place is a tip,
So Lord, won't you buy me pontoon at Kip ?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a nice new PC ?
I'm counting on you, Lord, please don't hold out on me.
Prove that you love me and buy one for me,
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a nice new PC ?

Everybody!
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a deckhouse saloon ?
My friends all sail Fishers, I must get one soon.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from iTunes,
So Lord, won't you buy me a deckhouse saloon ?

- with respectful acknowledgement of Janis Joplin, Michael McClure and Bob Neuwirth

Get over yourselves, its quite comical and not far from the truth. I'm sure Dylan can see the funny side.

Steve I am sorry to ruin you thread by giving somebody an excuse to carry on his personal vendetta.

Dylan I do hope that you stay around and keep posting on here. Just put such a person out of your mind. He much have such a horrible life if this is his only reason for stalking you.

Criticism and disagreement is one thing, this sort of aggressive mocking quite another. Find a better use for your time.
Yup, taking it a step further, it was the other nasty stuff combined with this that prompted my initial response. JD did the same with that young girl with the wooden boat, jelly ellie? To my eternal shame I posted a not nice post with that lot as well!

Dylan sold his newest Centaur at the end of last season. He has not continued his round Britain trip this year due to lack of funds. He now only sails up and down the river Deben in his smaller boat that he kept, as far as I can see.

Why does the article in the link say this?
Winter posts videos of his sailing exploits, and makes a significant amount of money doing so.

Nah, it got Dylan back here, he can be irritating but so can we all, better forum for his presence.
Stu

Agree 100%. Hope you hang around D.

As an aside, I mentioned my summer trip to Norfolk with the family in post in the lounge. Wouldn't have even considered that neck of the woods if it hadn't been for your films. Many thanks for that from me and the rest of my troops.

sorry...

not true

one image.... linked for ten days.... removed on take down notice... compensation payed under weird scottish laws.
Good to hear your disagreement with Mr Mackie was resolved.:encouragement:
Are you are to tell the forum, for the benefit of others, what "weird Scottish law" was involved?

Edit:
Your blog seems tantalisingly incomplete!
I hope the existence of the ongoing narrative of this experience on the web will be of some help to those who follow in my wake – but I think he relishes the stage

Welcome back Dylan and do hope we can enjoy more of your excellent and professional films in the future. How sad that one or two have nothing better to add to this thread than criticism and vitriol

I've no idea what motivation JD had for posting the lyrics and am not making any assumptions about that ..... however, the lyrics were not there when he made the post so must have been added later. I am stuggling to find them "quite comical" or anywhere near any "truth" that I am aware of.

Nice to have you back Dylan, stick the obnoxious duck on ignore and hang around

Is that a reference to me? I assure you that I have no personal vendetta whatsoever, and no personal antipathy to Dylan - who, as I have said before, I found a congenial person. Please don't fall into the trap of mistaking mild criticism of actions with personal attacks. It's quite possible not to like someone's postings, or videos (or books, or apple crumble, or gardening, or anything else they do) without thinking them a bad person.

My job involves a lot of specialised writing, and when I started a wise colleague advised me that "it's important to remember that when people criticise your work, they are basing that criticism on what you wrote, and you are therefore responsible for their comments. If you accept the criticism, change your words. If you don't, stick by them. But it's as wrong to respond to criticism with a personal reaction as it is to make criticism on the basis of a personal reaction." I accept that how people respond to anything I write, here or elsewhere, is down to me. The measured and constructive responses I take seriously. The silly personal attacks go in the mental dustbin.

Perhaps one which says that if you use other people's IP without permission and then claim copyright on it you may be asked to make amends? Not that it sound particularly weird or peculiarly Scottish, and I'd be mildly surprised if it wasn't known to the BBC.

Ah, the life of a creative artist is hard. There I am, putting the fruits of my labours out there for you all and this is all the thanks I get. I'm guessing you're not going to make a paypal donation, are you?

By happy coincidence, one of the letters in the latest "Dear Prudence" advice column seems rather appropriate to this discussion:

Q. Do I have to be a patron to be a friend?: I have a friend who’s an artist. I love hanging out with him, and he’s definitely skilled. He doesn’t have a traditional job right now because he’s trying to make his living on art, which I think is great. Problem is, he depends heavily on friends to buy his stuff and share his work on social media. I’ve commissioned him a few times and share his art sometimes. I want to support him when I can, but he always seems frustrated that people in his friend group aren’t supporting his work more. Is this something I can address? I don’t want him to resent me.

A: You’re his friend, not his employer or his mentor. It’s lousy to make your friends feel responsible for your success or failure as an artist, and if your friend resents you for not buying one of his creations every month, then he has unreasonable expectations of his friendships. That sort of pressure-filled leveraging of social relationships to make money is a killer of friendships. (Ask anyone who’s lost a loved one to an MLM company.) Counting on everyone you know personally to endlessly buy your work is not a sustainable career path for an artist.

If he tries to make you feel guilty, either directly or indirectly, for not permanently sponsoring him, you can and should push back. Tell him you love him and want him to be successful—and have often offered him financial support in the past—but you’re his friend, not Lorenzo de Medici, and he can’t hold his friends responsible for his career choices.

Maybe something we KTL refuseniks can bear in mind next time we're attacked for our parsimony.

I enjoyed Dylan's posts, and his dislike of mobo wakes was v amusing (I agree with him!) and I also enjoy reading most of what JD writes, but not on this subject, or when jellie Ellie was effectively hounded out.

I do hope that Dylan decides to start posting here again.

I enjoy and admire Dylan's work and I'm delighted to see him getting some exposure. I hope the article helps him gain a little more revenue from his efforts. Trying to make a very modest return on a great deal of effort hardly represents frenzied avarice.
