any or all of them. None of them are marinised. If you are worried about how it will cope on your boat (big ones have very expensive one's on board) just buy a cheap one, and replace it every few years if it fails.
Most people use auto radios either with a 6-CD remote cassette or an in-radio player. When wiring it in be aware that there is a separate feed to the CD-player which takes about 12 amps and needs to be separately fused.
That's because none are marinised. As a result they only last about 7 years before requiring replacing.
My latest one is a Clarion - the first one I tried to fit had a faulty on-off switch on the radio unit and I had to get a replacement from the company.
You could, of course use a really cheap portable CD-player and feed it into the amplifier of your radio.
Use a cleaner for the lens about every 6-months and you'll have far less problem with reading the CD. I've got about 300 on the boat (mainly copies with the originals at home) and storing CDs is a challenge you'll need to address. I use those wallets and don't bother with jewel cases.
I agree with ccscott49, DVD players are so cheap these days they're almost disposable items. HOWEVER...if you are thinking about upgrading your on board marinised PC, get one with a DVD replay facility. By definition it'll probably be one of the high end ones...and as such it may still be cheaper to have a cheapo stand alone DVD player. But it would save space. Only trouble with the PC option is that it is unlikely to be multi region.
As for the poster who talked about CD's...and thier storage. MP3 is most definitely the way to go. Small size, low power and 10,000 track storage. (only trouble is... getting a signal out of an ipod into a radio may be a bit tricky...depends on the radio)
On the other hand...
high end DVD players now can play CD's and MP3.... but again, the player isn't marinsed.....
Completely agree, I am presently travelling the world (not by sea unfortunately) with my modest music collection on my laptop. 1400 tracks, 4.3 days 5.7Gb according to iTunes. I shudder to think what space that would occupy as CD's in their cases (or vinyl!). I particularly enjoy recording radio4 plays, comedy, quizzes etc off the web and listening to them off line at my leisure.
(Nothing to do with DVD, but what's wrong with a bit of thread drift ?)
As far as I know most 'listen again' programmes are not available as downloadable files, and of course live streamed audio is not.
I use a shareware utility called Audio Record Wizard to record the streamed audio as mp3 in real time (with the sound turned off!) during the day. Even as I type I am recording last Saturdays Jonathon Ross show (for SWMBO I hasten to add).
Thanks Bembow. Most interesting. I'll see if I can find a site for that.
BTW. Nothing wrong with Jonathon Woss.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif It's quite a good show, so no need to apologise!
Back on topic now...
There are many 12v dvd players on ebay at about £100. they are standard DIN size so take up little space and most are multiregion.
You could replace you radio/CD player with one as some will feature tuners too.
One seller (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://search.ebay.co.uk/_Automotive_W0QQcatrefZC12QQsacategoryZ9800QQsassZbabybabyblu23QQsatitleZQQsomorecategoriesZ1QQsorecordsperpageZ50QQsosortorderZ1QQsosortpropertyZ1>babybabyblu23</A>) is offering many dash mounted DVD players/radio/amp AND 6 inch screen for £99 AND is based in the UK

Ashley,
Thanks for the link. This is most interesting. I don't think I'd use the screen though....too small. I'd plumb it into something more viewable. My only other reservation is whether it will play bog standard music CD's. It says it'll do CD-DA...but not sure whether this is the same as an audio CD. Any ideas?
All these acronyms these days (if that means what I think it means!!) are highly confusing!
But v interesting all the same...and the price is pretty good.
Thanks again.
Cliff
Hi,
I use my bog standard Compaq laptop to watch DVD's if the boss is using the TV/DVD in the house. It works just as well onboard or I can pipe the feed off to a TFT monitor if I want a bigger picture. The laptop also plays audio cd's and can write to CD , audio , photos etc. The only time I have ever had a problem with my own recorded CD's is playing a CDRW made on the PC on my home Sony HiFi. It plays everywhere else including the main DVD indoors.
I'd get a decent laptop with a rewritable CD / DVD Combo drive . You can get laptops with rewritable DVD drives although more expensive but like the CD/DVD Combo drives , will also play audio cd's and record to CDR & CDRW discs.
If you have a problem with acronyms search the internet ie: CDRW +definition.
