This happened recently- w/o any external assistance....not an old /abused leg.

Just out of interest (wasn't my boat)....is that a really isolated thing, or does it happen from time to time?

Must be a manufacturing defect because there are much more powerful engines driving through the same shaft. The 43's produce 230hp the 44 about 260hp and the 300 about 285hp (from memory!) so if the engine is a 43 or smaller it should be well within design safety limits.

I don't think this is common.
Maybe it was damaged by a previous owner, and left it with a stress crack which has only just failed?
