Ok,

So now I've got the green light on a boat, I need to work out how much of my budget can actually be spent on the boat, and how much I'll need for all the other stuff that goes with boat ownership....

Unfortunately, I've never owned my own boat before, so some of the stuff that might seem bleedin obvious to you is still a mystery to me... so I aplogise in advance for the dumb questions I am going to ask, but boy do I have a lot of 'em...

Question #1

I'm hoping to keep my boat in a marina. I guess that it'll come out of the water most years for 2 or 3 months, to let it dry a little, to avoid the worst excesses of winter weather, and for me to do a little fettling and fixing.... but...
When you pay your annual marina berthing fee, and then the lifting fee, do you have to supply your own props/cradle as well, or do the marinas generally supply these as part of their hardstanding/berthing fees?

Not only do you need a green light but a red one and a white one too.

Depends on the deal with the marina. You can pay an annual fee which entitles you to be there, in or out of the water, sometimes with one lift out and one lift in included. Or some lesser arrangement, like paying by the month, one (dearer) rate when in, and a cheaper rate when out. If you don't have a cradle or props, they'll charge you handsomely for one. If you do have a cradle, they'll charge you handsomely for storing it ashore through the summer. Some marinae, which aren't very busy in the winter, offer 'bargain' winter rates. Thus, you might want to move the boat, having it one place near good sailing in the summer and moving it somewhere closer to home in the winter.

So how long is a piece of string?

Do you have any hardstanding next or near your house.. cus this could save you lots and make the fettling and fixing very easy from the point of being able to do the odd hour rather than plan and cart all the tools / materials down to the boat.. You just need to invest in the boats stands/cradle but a lot of folks just use substantial poles (depending on the boat but usually around the telegraph pole size.. infact many look like sawn off telegraph poles.. must be able to source these somewhere.. an old railway sleeper along the length of the keel/s..

if marinas are anything like over here, you better look for a 'dock' before you buy, because over here you could find yourself with a boat and no parking space
