Did you get a price for the M20 x 300 ?
BTW, I think I'd use these rather than R-clips

You're right. I've noticed the more tools I have the less my mind is tuned in to doing things without the exactly ideal tool for the job. Since I've had this beauty I wouldn't dream of skidding a drill bit frustratingly around on a bit of round bar by hand. Maybe one day long ago I had to and I'd probably have managed but its an alien thought now!No fancy mag drills or pillar it was the gruelling job of drilling by hand repeatedly. My wrists where killing me, My hands where Numb (All other tradesman has the easy route using machines) But i also learned the art of not depending on fancy machinery to to the task. Was a bit cruel and relentless but it has opened my eyes to the fact machinery is for SPEED ONLY. Everything in industry now is machinery for a quicker turnover as "Time is Money" not for the fact of precision. And I'm 29 years old so cant pull the tale of "yeah but things have changed from them days" because they haven't.
Blacksmiths have been around for 1000's of years and made do just fine with BASIC hand tools.

I’ve thought long and hard about getting a cnc machine. It’s just that when I explain it to the wife, she always asked what I need it for and I can’t answer her. Why don’t women understand ?You're right. I've noticed the more tools I have the less my mind is tuned in to doing things without the exactly ideal tool for the job. Yeah if one is pottering on quite often DIYing then yes ofcourse pillars and bandsaws etc etc would be of good investment but where does one draw the line? You're right. That's an interesting clip you have shown. What are they called and where do you get them? I might have a use for two of them on my Monitor windvane.

You’re right. But now a close personal friend, Athomson, has one, how can she refuse me?Wives can make themselves disagreeable by asking questions that are not always easy to answer:
"Do we need it?" "How much did that cost?" "Have we got room for it?" "How do other people manage without it?"![]()
OK, we've completely terrified the poor OP. With all the know it alls on here, there must be someone on the E Coast who will volunteer to drill it for him. Come on guys, put yourmoneyskill where your mouth is.
The OP has a pin for a lifting keel. He has already mentioned R-clips, I don't think he wants to mess about with hex keys and collars.
As for a hose clip to secure a pin - please tell me you're not serious!
It’s just that when I explain it to the wife
If you show me something you made, I will explain to the wife how we couldn’t live without one (by the way, do you also have a 3D printer?)I think i see the problem! Did she tell you that was a necessary part of the tool supply chain?
If you're in the trade I guess you can do bigger things at work? I'm definitely over equipped in the garage department. Its crept up on me gradually over the years until last time we moved house domestic removal people refused to move us, said I needed specialist industrial movers. The thing is every tool was a bargain mrs. The drill was one of 5 I acquired. I cleaned them up, took all the best bits to make one mint one for myself and sold the rest on for enough that i got mine effectively for free. Other stuff once you get into a job and you need a specific tool you buy one and then it clings to you like a limpet. I look through my tools sometimes thinking to rationalise but everything is useful. Its like loosing weight, it is massively easier to not buy tools than it is to sell them later. Is there a tools anonymous thing out there to help me?Yeah if one is pottering on quite often DIYing then yes ofcourse pillars and bandsaws etc etc would be of good investment but where does one draw the line?
When one has a fully kitted out their "Garage or shed" to be a full blown unit and could open up their own fabrication shop, With upwards of £5000+ on machinery?
I think folk need to be realistic and determine how much DIYing they intend to do and is it worth really buying/Investing in quality fixed pillar drills/Machinery for the sake of a few holes now and again.
Honestly my tool kit (At home) consists of...
Angle grinder with various types of disks,
Electric hand drill and quality bits
Basic fabricators hand tools, Vice grips, Square, Centre pops, G clamps Etc.
I job on quite a bit in my spare time and have not felt the need for more "professional" Equipment in the past 14 years of being in the welding/Fabrication trade.
I make do and serves me well. I still get the same result as my mate does with all his expensive "Machinery" in his garage.
Suppose somebody could very well invest an unthinkable amount of money in tools and machinery BUT they might have all the gear AND no idea. It definitely pays to start small and increase over time
That’s brilliant ! Look, just in case the wife asks, what is it?I made this a while back. I hope she likes it. Frankly you're not going to make one of those without a proper pillar drill. Prove me wrong doubters!!

It transcends mere description. Suffice to say its more of a form than a function thing. Women should understand that, I don't think there'll be any more resistance. That’s brilliant ! Look, just in case the wife asks, what is it?
