Think its bakelite. Pressure cooker handle. Safe to drill a hole in it without it shattering?

I've not tried it, but Mr G found me this:
"You should drill plastic/Bakelite the same way that you would drill fiberglass. Drill a much smaller hole than the finish hole. Use a very sharp or better yet a new countersink and starting as square to the surface as possible, slowly and at fairly high speed open the hole to about the final size "
It strikes me that the problem might not be the actual drilling but whether you have weakened the handle enough for it to fail and shed its load on the cabin sole.

Check how old is the cooker because bakelite until the 80s is understood to contain Asbestos.

As Channel Sailor has pointed out Bakelite may well have an Asbestos content it was added as a strengthening fibre

It might not shatter until you're carrying it full of scalding water with the lid off. Think on.
