Re: SWMBOnomics

Yer a great man for the lateral thinking and that is a fact. I used to apply this mathematical reasoning whilst taking drink in the working mens club - as beer was sometimes 6d cheaper (a pint) I could save 4 or 5 shillings a night which would obviously buy me a fish supper for the way home and still leave some over.
I don't know whether you realise this but Cadburys Buttons - which used to be known as Chocolate drops are now 12 shillings for a measly little packet. I've known the time when 12 shillings worth of chocolate would have lasted 24 weeks on the allowance generously bestowed upon me by Pater.

Re: SWMBOnomics

Surely, in days of old when you took drink in the working men's club a pint of heavy was only 2d in a normal pub - Bread and cheese and extra 1 1/2d.

Re: quid pro quo

From your response it sound like I touched a raw nerve! Are you of the blazer and yachting cap brigade?

When I kept my boat at Weymouth I was a member of the Royal Dorset. When I joined, the burning issue was ‘should ladies be allowed to become full members’. Thank God, they were but not without a vociferous minority of objectors. Now that I keep my boat on the river Frome, its not practical to belong to a club but the clubs that I visit appreciate the cash that I contribute to their coffers.

Going through the same at the moment, do I renew or not, most of the old members no longer go in since someone had the bright idea of new blood on the committee. Now no one uses the club, except the new member for social events.
The problem is that if I pay, I can go on sending letters and asking awkward questions to the committee, and it's good fun.

Raw nerve, yes.

My local club (yes, a once great blazer and yacht cap brigade, now fallen on hard times) has lost a lot of members in recent years because they are asking why they should pay for what most of the rest of the town seems to regard as a free asset.

A suggestion to limit hospitality to proven visiting members of other clubs has had the committee divided for years.

I've now taken the hint, and done a Claymore.

Re: SWMBOnomics

I think Bob has me down as being really old - say like Longjohnsilver - or god forbid Twisterken.
When first taking drink legally I was paying 1s 10d per pint. When you could get mild it was 1s 10d.
Petrol was 4s 8d a gallon - can't remember any more! - oh well a haircut - which I used to get in those days was 2/-

Re: SWMBOnomics

Makes mine look expensive.

My first pint of (shame on me) McEwans Export was 18p in 1974 which equates to 3s 2d - assuming that yours was bought pre 1971 ?

All you had to do was ask for a "pintaheavypal" and it was a lottery what you were served. Didn't sound the same in a squeaky voice though.
