Most chandlers will sell them, probably better than mail order as you can check it for fit on your dog. Make sure that it fits snug as dogs just love to slip out of them. Make sure that it has handle fitted so that you can lift your dog if it is not too big like a handbag on and off the boat/dinghy and also allows you get a boat hook in if the dog goes overboard. If you decide to attach a safety line make sure this is to the handle and not to the collar.

Should your dogs ever go overboard do not be tempted to go in and try to save them as they are likely to survive without your help but there is a good chance that you will end up the main character at a funeral if your body is found.

We got "Skipper" a lifjacket from The1stoppetshop an ebay based supplier.

This lifejacket has a velcro neoprene underbelly arrangement other than just straps that can dig in and be uncomfortable, he seems pleased with it they do 5 sizes... this one cost £14.99 including delivery.

I bought one in Fox's Chandlery last week. £33.00 for XXS (JRT pup).

First time for me as all my other dogs were enthusiastic swimmers and I hope that she will be as well. However, with East Coast tides I am being prudent.

I once had a choc lab who went out into Red Wharf bay swimming after seagulls. Each time he got within 20 feet they took off and landed 100 yards away. Off he would go again. After about two hours of watching him disappear almost over the horizon I contemplated calling the RNLI. Anyway, he eventually staggered back up the beach completely knackered.

I had to laugh at one of those 'Three Men' programmes when Rhys Jones was in a punt on the Fens complete with yellow lab and lifejacket!
