The reason they are fitted on the outside is to help prevent wind and spray reaching the cockpit. If they were fitted inside, the weather would tend to tear them away as opposed to the guardrails supporting the extra pressure.

Thread on with cord going through each hole round gaurd wire and thenback through the same hole and on along to the next hole. This way the metal cringle at each hole is in contact with the guard wire and the dodger does not chafe and you effectily support from both sides , guard wire on one side cord on the other side. Disadvantage is that you need lots more cord.
When you are in the South China Sea and a freak wave hits you , the dodgers should be inside the guard rails so that they tear away and don't destroy the stanchions etc.
Mmmm on the other hand, if the wave comes from the other side its going to happen anyway.
Mmmmmm maybe you should do what you prefer !!!!
Some people have the yachts name painted (silk screen or acrylic) or sometimes vynil lettering, on the dodgers, this could get scraped by being inside the rails.
we cut ours out of white acrylic and stitched (and stitched and stitched and stitched and stitched and cried and stitched and stitched) I thought that is what everyone did.. doh!
