It depends on if they have the yachts name or not, if they do the paint could get scratched by the lines, if not I guess it doesn't matter?

Funny enough I just re-painted mine after a summer of being inside the dodgers and rubbing.
 
The reason they are fitted on the outside is to help prevent wind and spray reaching the cockpit. If they were fitted inside, the weather would tend to tear them away as opposed to the guardrails supporting the extra pressure.

Thread on with cord going through each hole round gaurd wire and thenback through the same hole and on along to the next hole. This way the metal cringle at each hole is in contact with the guard wire and the dodger does not chafe and you effectily support from both sides , guard wire on one side cord on the other side. Disadvantage is that you need lots more cord.
 
we cut ours out of white acrylic and stitched (and stitched and stitched and stitched and stitched and cried and stitched and stitched) I thought that is what everyone did.. doh!
