The 2nd reason is that many drop the hose into the sea.. Regardless of all the compulsory non return valves they claim if there was a large fire and the fire brigade was pulling a large quantity from the water mains the hoses dangling in the sea could suck up the sea water and contaminate the fresh water supply.
Meanwhile over a mile of waterpipes can sit under the pontoons cooking in the sun with little water flow, but thats ok ?
Not only into the sea. I have seen dog-owners shove a hose into their hairy dog's rear end for a douche. On the whole, the etiquette of returning the nozzle to a safe place on the reel is well observed. It's just the odd careless person who lets us down.

The standing water problem is more important for those with showers, where legionaires' disease can be spread, which is why the one-minute flush is necessary, or better still, take the hose from someone who has used it.

That doesn't bear thinking about ?

I fill the tank after every trip, even one night, and do it after I've rinsed the boat and the anchor locker if I've been at anchor, which is usually the case.

I chartered from a firm in Corfu a couple of years back. There was a hose on board which we used to refill a couple of times. When I returned the boat, the rep wanted to know if I'd already refilled the water tanks (I had) and whether I'd blocked the heads (I hadn't). Then as part of their, what looked like a well rehearsed, procedure, she turned the heads sea cock off, opened the waste cap on deck and poked the hose about 2 foot into the hole to fill the holding tank before then reopening the sea cock to flush out.

My comment about the use of the hose for potable water seemed wasted on her.

250 litres of water last us a couple or three days as others have said .
I use the blue flat cassette hose like the one shown above. On my second one in 12 years and it seems okay but it will probably go he same way a as the last one and perish in the end.
The expandable hoses look like they are better for storage . .......getting the flat hose back in its cassette is always a pain.
Same with it.

Returning to this thread I am remembering that in over 50 years of boating I have never noticed a stale taste to our tank water but just recently have noticed it. The water company had done some recent work to the mains supply and that may have caused it? water looks clean enough but on it's own does have a taste. We fill our tank weekly when about 1/4 full so are only using around 300 lts/week. When we lived on dirt we used to have Brita water filter jugs to reduce the scummy of continuous filter coffee, maybe will have to try that tactic again or just take my daily pills with gin and tonic.

The fact that all marinas removed (should have) hoses at the same time should tell you its nothing to do with saving money ? hoses like electricity was all part of the services they offered.
The WRAS water regulations are responsible. Health and safety is one of the reasons.. A hose out in the sun all day can harbour a whole load of nastys which you then transfer to your boats water tank.. That seems to completely ignore what your own hose which may rarely get used can harbour, but that would be your own fault, not the marinas.

I've always wondered how dirty water was supposedly going to get back into a pressurised system. Now I know. :)

I know hosepipes are removed because of hygiene concerns, but I wonder whether my own Gardena cassette hose is so much better from a hygiene point of view. Although you have to empty it in order to be able to stow it, some moisture inevitably remains and who knows what happens inside the hose between two fills? That may be a couple of weeks for things to fester.
Whichever I use, marina hose or my own, I will always let the water run and rinse the boat before I fill the tank.

Easy. Just swap the n and b keycaps with less used keys, like "[" and "]".

Yours helpfully,

I bought an extending hose from Lidl last year but it didn't last long. To be fair I think I pulled the hose before it expanded and split the hose at the tap end. Operator error!

I now have a 15 m one from hozelok which has a 5 he warranty if you register on their website.

Bought at Toolstation for around £28 and came with a tap connector, adjustable nozzle and storage box.

Flow rate seems very good..
