For communication between 2 vessels, do you have a favourite /preffered channel to use and if so why?

Just out of interest really, nothing more sinister than that!!

Can't remember the last time I wanted to communicate between two vessels.

Except for the Scuttlebutt Cruise last weekend, for which the channel had been prearranged and nobody answered my hail anyway :)

6 - 'cos it's the only one I can remember! We do talk ship-to-ship quite often - the Medway is quite a sociable place to sail!

I suspect that we probably should steer clear of 6 since it is informally reserved for port ops, but it does not seem to be used round our part of the world.

Very very informally! Channel 6 is the primary intership channel, with no secondary allocation.

There's a table of channel allocations in here: www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mgn_324.pdf

69

I just love 69. Its the whole symetrical thing....

Channel 69 is the Australian Navies chat channel. Who is surprised? Bombardment range is only a few miles away from me and I use the scan mode with 69 in the memory. Always entertaining when the ships are working up for Gulf deployment.

I prefer to use 72 because it is more likely to be free than 77, but often I use Ch 6 because my DSC set defaults to it when dialling from the Address book.

VHF channel

Here in Perth (west Oz) by club agreement 72 for ocean and 77 for estuary (river) traffic which also includes club race management. It works out well olewill

15 or 17.

These are guard bands for Ch16 so will only work on low power. Seem to be used a lot by military for bridge to rib or just bow to stern communications. Very useful if other working channels are busy.

+1 often used by ships but then as Low power channels it means its not taking up as air waves...

Do you switch lo low power if they are near by?
