Do you drive on the correct side of the river?

Including giving three short blasts on your horn, presumably :)

Pete

Hmmm ... The Isle of Wight car ferries don't give three blasts and they must be going astern one way or the other !

But the col regs merely state three blasts when operating astern propulsion, not necessarily going one direction or another.

Does a chap have to run round each ferry trip changing over the port & stbd marks on board ?

They usually have lights for running in both directions, so just the flick of a switch.

The Col Regs do not provide for specific direction relative to the layout of a vessel, so if you are going astern for any distance then you keep your vessel to the right hand side of the channel relative to your direction of motion and pass other vessels on their port side, as now your own vessels sides have effectively changed whilst travelling astern, i.e. your reversed motion is of relevance to you only, you are still as far as other boats are concerned moving forwards. To other vessels you may approach you are a vessel underway moving towards them and you are obliged to obey the Col Regs as duly required, and the onus is very much on you to make sure you do just that, bearing in mind such a motion could easily confuse other water users, in which case you should be prepared to make whatever action is required to avoid a collision, but this is the case anyway.

So go with the flow, so to speak,

I read this last night and had a bit of a think and whether or not I was going to admit the following. Here goes, I'm in a different time zone so all is excused!

Boat in PS and the "river" is not really a river but a navigation across the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour missing a lot of mud banks and obviously when getting to the Tipner ranges making way as I'm "navigating the Portchester Channel [and] are to pass through the area as quickly as possible". Sorry - grammar not good but I can't make the LNM sound much better in context.

Anyhoo, like others, I take the "racing line" from PS to the P-harbour. Depending on traffic, I might be on the wrong side of the channel but never when I get to the harbour proper and am always listening on #11 etc. I think in PS it's a given - Mobos follow the route I'm talking about, Sailey boats do their own thing but we move to the "right" side when necessary. Overtaking on a bank holiday monday before we get to the lock despite the fact a sailey boat is doing 2kn however is a completely different scenario. Obv never done that.
Are you talking about me or port Solent.:)

Well I am sure we all have experience of bad skippers in both mobo's and raggie communities, but this recent incident took the biscuit. Just over a week ago I was on the Itchen heading towards Southampton Water going past the entrance to Ocean Village Marina (to starboard) a yacht was heading towards the Itchen Bridge under motor. I held my course in order that we would pass to port. Then without any indication the yacht turned 90 degrees to port and was immedaitely on a constant bearing. I remained 'stand on' as I wasn't convinced that the skipper wouldn't correct her mistake. Anyway as the yacht was under my bow I pulled back on the throttles and gave a small amount of reverse in order to come to a stop. The female skipper and male crew members started shaking their heads and shouting at me, as if I had done something wrong. I'm normally a very calm skipper, but their arrogance incenced me, so I shouted that I was the 'stand-on' vessel and the skipper should learn her colregs as she passed at 90 degrees from my port side directly under my bow. Even though I would have been courteous had she been under sail, there were no sails up and she was clearly under power. I pointed out that they were a motor boat, to which I received a number of hand jestures from the crew (draw your own conclusions from that). I know us mobo's are critised by our raggie brethrin but this type of arrogant behaviour only serves to prove that it doesn't matter wether you are a mobo or raggie skipper, an idiot skipper is an idiot skipper!
