Do Lewmar know their own winches?

I've just fitted a pair of Lewmar 16 two-speed non-ST winches. One of them has an additional flat plastic washer above the two roller bearings, that I cannot see in any parts diagram. I e-mailed Lewmar asking which of the two was correct, and if the washer was missing from one of them, could I have one? They replied asking if I could send photos! Apart from the minor fuss of dismantling them for photos, it does seem odd that they are asking me for photographs of two of their own winches fresh out of the boxes...........

Assuming these are old (but new to you) winches... Are they the ones shown on page 7 here...

http://www.lewmar.com/%5Cassets%5Cimg%5Cdataset%5CManual-Winch%20Part%20Manual%20-%20Volume%2010.pdf

This shows a large drum washer under the roller bearings

This shows a drum washer above the rollers, but not the large one below!

One of my winches is the former, the other a combination of the two! Certainly there are grounds for confusion, but why do Lewmar not know?

I'll send them photographs.........

p.s. Just a bit of my own thread drift, the old winch mounting nuts were glassed over; it was a bit of a pain to chip it off to get a spanner on, especially in such confined spaces with limited access. Why did Sadler do it?

The Lewmat PDF seems to match what I found servicing our oldish winches

There should be a flat disk washer below the roller bearings on all winches - this covers the gear pin below which would otherwise cause friction
Smaller winches have two bearings with no cylinder spacer between - larger winches (40 and above according to the Lewmar link) have a plastic cylinder spacer between the two bearings

Hope this helps

Neil,

Apologies for the rather confusing response from our service department!

Volume 10 is the latest manual and presuming your winches are indeed new, and not new-in-box winches from the 70s or 80s, then I can confirm that there should be a large flat plastic drum washer BELOW the two bearings. There should be no washer above.

All that said, maybe the guys asked for a photo to figure out where the erroneous washer has come from.

Apologies again and I hope this helps clarify.
