DIY stop solenoid installation (diesel)

My Perkins 6.354 has a CAV DPA 326 rotary injection pump, with a fuel shut-off lever that has to be mechanically operated to stop the engine via a length of string. I would like to fit a 12V solenoid to stop the engine with (though I might keep the pull-string option as a back-up), but have been unable to figure out what, if any, stop solenoid will fit my fuel pump. At around £40 these are pretty expensive, and I'm reluctant to take a chance in case I can't make it fit. But after seeing the adapter below I thought actually any diesel rated electromechanical valve with sufficient Kv-value should be able to do the job just as well, as long as it's mounted close to the fuel pump:

Basically, I'm thinking of using a valve of this type:

What do you guys think, is it necessary to operate the shut-off lever on the pump to safely stop the engine, or will a valve like the above on the pump input work just as well?
 
This is an actuator I made for my mechanical lever diesel engine



I used a wiper motor from a scrap yard with a couple of gears, limit switched and a little metal fabrication

operated by the ignition switch on ready to start switch switch off engine stops

I have some similar motors operating some ball valves as sea cocks

The name Robinson is a man who is the president of our equivalent to RYA and I have major issues with that man as he has accused me of insulting, slander and liable but I have never been allowed to answer to any charges so it means legal action

My ability to design various dagits is why I use Roger the bodger as my handle

Having been in Design for over 60 years I always think out of the box

I would avoid interfering with the fuel supply and use a stop solenoid like this to stop the engine using the existing lever (just an example, plenty of choices):

Modern cars use a motor drive for locking the doors. Travel about 15mm plenty of force. Should be easy to find at motor dismantlers or spares shop. Does need a reverse supply to return the lever. ie power down power up. ol'will

I tried to use one of those door lock motors but I found that would move due to vibration on the motor thus shutting off the engine by vibrating into the stop position.

Th worm gear of a wiper motor self locked in either the run and/or stop position
 
there must be simple stop solenoids in scrapyards, but all you have to do is pull the lever, as the string does. here's one
oh, it's in the post above.....

Beware, some solenoid/pump installations are current to run, some are current to stop. Current to run means it acts when you switch on the ignition which is simpler to wire, but a failure in current will stop the engine unexpectedly. You want one that pulls when actuated, As does your string. Mine was push button on the dash. You could use a Bowden cable.

A current to run solenoid would need to be a continuous rated or have a switch to reduce the voltage to just hold the solenoid in run position

A stop solenoid does only needs an intermittent rating so will be cheaper to make
 
A local staionary engine, Lister 3cyl 36hp, has a current to run solenoid. It clicks over as the ignition is turned on, stops the engine when the ignition is turned off. I don't like them because a fail is an engine fail.
Of course, installed the other side of the lever they work the other way, pull to stop instead of pull to run, but need a separate button or spring switch.
 
I'm with PaulRainbow, it is cheap just needs a mounting bracket sorting and will return to run position again by means of the spring so no worries about a failure preventing engine running.
Such a simple solution and you can still have your string as plan B, just add a stop button to helm position and job done, or find an ignition switch with the stop position.
