managed to find a manual on board today, it says after changing the fuel filter you need to 'vent' the system, is this done by bleeding the injectors or is there a primer pump?

The owners manual explains what to do.

Two stages. firstly with the lift pump while venting the filter. Secondly at the injectors while spinning the engine on the starter

The same explanation but with clearer diagrams in the workshop manual
see the link in Playtimes post above

In the real world Vic, just need to vent the filter, then the engine will splutter and start. Ive never needed to vent the injectors. The biggest prob is the puny lift pump, thats why I put the thumb pump filter in place of the primary CAV 296. The return fuel system allows it to self blreed. For info the Montego 2.0 diesel lift pump is the same, I bought one off ebay for £20 ish, a lot cheaper than the VP one!
Its exactly the same as the VP one.

I know. My old Fiesta car did not have a lift pump ( the Pug has a rubber bulb) Just used to screw on the filter and crank the engine 'til it fired and with luck ran!

We had an MD22L on a previous boat some years back and it would usually prime itself with no venting and start after about 4-5 seconds of cranking followed by some coughing and spluttering even after both the primary and secondary fuel filters were changed. That with about an average, depending on fill, 1m lift from the fuel tank to the lift pump. But we did have a big water lift muffler so a bit of cranking was not an immediate backflooding issue.

Agree on the puny lift pump if operated manually but on the very odd occasion when the engine did not self prime quickly and with other small engines not so compliant I just opened the vent on the filter and cranked the engine with the injectionpump/governer stop lever held in the stop position until fuel vented. To prevent the risk of back flooding if long cranking was required I just closed the raw water seacock and remembered (always :)) to open it before actually starting the engine.
