DIY antenna

That is a good question.

I bought a Metz aerial as a back-up because it was supposed to be the best. It has a large cylinder at the base which K hope has special bits in it to make it super good ... ?
The cylinder will have a coil of wire of a few turns in it. One end to the base of the vertical and the other to the outer of the coax. The inner of the coax will be soldered part way up the inductor. Nothing magical about the RF theory and practice. Nothing Metz is doing that makes them perform magically better than other 5/8 verticals. (No criticism of Metz here: just don’t believe any hype about them. )

Having had a V-Tronix ss whip fail through water ingress at the whip (and taking out the coax with it), if Metz aren't all that, are there any makes that are decent ~ what do you use? Many thanks

We use a V-Trionix and it seems to last OK. I do put Vaseline on the threads to help waterproof it but I do that to lots of electronic/electricsl connections that are or may be exposed to the elements.

Thanks. I won't be buying the one with the inbuilt hawk, again, as it was that aluminium sleeve that corroded and split open the casing top.
The other disappointing thing is the proprietary coax connector, which means that your stuck with their rg58 and from my reading here and elsewhere, it's worth getting something better.

Also worth noting it's a vampire tap (a pin that pierced the cable). They're not meant to be disconnected and reconnected.

Interesting, thanks. Next time round though, I'll get a separate antenna and coax anyway which is why I was interested to hear why John didn't rate Metz as they were on my list, or the better Shakespeare ones but I don't know of and didn't find any others when I last looked. I'd be interested to hear of better than average antenna models.
