Hi folks, and merry Christmas to you and yours.
I have a strange problem in that I think I may have the wrong dipsticks in both engines. The dipsticks do not sit very well in the tube, with at least an inch of dipstick above the tube when fully inserted, but the end sounds like it hits the base of the sump. My reasoning is, that I had pumped all the oil out with one of those electric suction thingies, and as I thought, completely emptying the sump so that the dipstick is totally dry. I screwed on a new oil filter, so there was definitely no oil left.... The high mark on the dipstick was covered after 5 litres of oil went in. The book says these things hold a fair bit more than that - 10.5 to 11.5 litres, or 11 to 12 quarts depending on inclination. I wondered, could I impose on anyone's kind nature with these engines, and measure the length of their dip-stick (ooh err) and tell me how far along the low and high marks are, please? Don't go straight away... please open your presents and finish up your dinner first!
Many thanks in anticipation.

If as you say the sumps were empty and then you refilled with the specified amount, then mark the sticks as is, most engines require this calibration due to the manufacturures not knowing where or how the engines will sit in any given boat, as far as min and max goes give yourself 5/10mm. Hope this helps.

I think you are putting dipstick in wrong hole /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif On my ad41's there is a tube for sucking oil out( it has plastic cap over it ) and a tube for engine dipstick. From memory the tube to suck oil out goes into block by oil pressure switch, oil filter side. Merry Xmas .Geoff

Could be the wrong dipstick. My AD 41B's have 2 dipsticks per engine. Had AQAD41 before so when I got the boat I checked the oil and found a dipstick with no markings. (steel rod only) I then asked my mechanic to order 2 new ones with proper markings. When he delivered and tried them we found the protruded as well. They actually were dipstics to fit an AD41P and he thought this would be the same. In the end they were not needed as we found another properly marked (short) dipstick underneath the injection pump. Never found anyone who could tell me what the function was of the top dip stick without marking. (not talking about the drain tube, this one is more in front of the engine.

If properly drained five lites is not enough oil. I have found it does vary. Probably due to how quickly you pump out after the engine has warmed up. I would expect 7 - 9 liters and then add a little after the oil filter has filled.

Very old thread to bring back to life, but I seem to have the exact same problem as Dalex back in 2005.

I recently acquired a Fairline Mirage 29 with an AQAD 41A, and have been trying to change the oil. After 2 attempts including warming engine and buying 2 different vacuum systems, and an electric pump, I could only get about 6.5L out of the (?11L) capacity, when most seem to get say 8.5L to 9L, inc what's left in the old filter.

Despite the low amount, the way the sump clanged when a tube was pushed down the dipstick hole made me feel like there wasn't much oil left, and when I did fill it with about the same quantity of new oil, and ran the engine, the oil still looked very clean. So it became likely that I had been pretty succesful with the extraction, but with only 6.5L of new oil added, I could only wonder about the length of the diptick (the engine is laying in situ on the water, so should be more or less level).

So I compared my distick with 2 other boats with AD41's on the marina, and mine was 30mm longer than theirs. Pretty much slam-dunk the wrong dipstick then so you'd think, and maybe explains why the oil level in the boat when I bought is was about 15mm over the top mark (although I still only extracted 6.5L???).

But then I read XR3i's vital statistics above, and his tool is even longer than mine (Mine's 625-643mm), and if correct scuppers my belief that mine's too long, thus my engine is very much low on oil.

Please can anyone with a AD41 (I think all the 40's are similar) tell me ho long there's is? (or even better, be able to quote/reference a VP doc that states it in b&w?)

Oil wait patiently in anticipation

Where are you trying to extract the oil , the 41A has a dedicated suction tube , don’t try through the dipstick tube , do not push plastic tubes down the dipstick tube .

Oh Heck! too late for that advice Paul, in my desperation to extract more oil I tried all options; the dedicated vacuum tube, with or without insert, and the dispstick tube with insert. What could be a negative effect of pushing a plastic tube down the dipstick hole?
