I am re-wiring my Bukh 18hp engine with a 2 battery bank. I want to use the diode system. What is the difference between ordinary blocking diodes and a split electronic diode besides 80 quid regard.

the cheap ones work well but only if you have a smart regulator which senses the voltage at the battery (and boosts the alternator voltage to compensate). without that you'll hardly put any charge into the batteries.

v.cheap diode splitters

Furneaux riddall (02392 668621) are clearing 70Amp 3-way splitters for £15 + vat.....they work ok, but do need battery sensed regulator.

If you use diodes [the cheaper ones] in parallel with a two way battery switch in a splitting diode configuration then if you accidentally forget to turn on the switch to A Battery/B battery/Both Batteries i.e. leave it in the OFF position the diodes will take care of things allowing the charging of both . By selecting the battery position with the switch you can control which battery gets charged making use of the voltage drop feature. The battery control position also governs which battery will deliver current when the motor is not running.

Using both a blocking diode and a two way switch makes an almost foolproof system. [If you can follow this then you are not a fool, sorry without illustrations I can not explain more clearly. If I were not such a fool then I would be able to sort out a clearer solution]
