Dinghy trot knot

I'd have to look up a Carrick bend. My goto knot to joint two bits of line is a sheet bend, a double sheet bend if it's going to be flapping about, like a flag halyard, or have a serious load.
I think I have heard the sheet bend referred to as a common bend, which is why I wrote that without thinking, a common habit of mine.

Have you considered splicing a snap shackle /caribiner to the end. Then it's very simple. We did it years ago on an old dinghy painter and haven't regretted it
No, it isn't allowed on a trot line here at least. My current set up seems to be working great.

I have changed the attachment to the dinghy itself to an anchor bend/hitch and it seems solid! Thanks
