We were trained to use waypoints, but set a distance of, say, 50 m off in the chart plotter.
And if everybody else does that... Carnage in Lake Solent. ;)

OK, you need to be at the same point in time and space for a crash, but I like to work out what I think is the best position for my boat when it comes to waypoints.

I prefer to set my own waypoints. They are in locations that make sense to me and can quite often be approached from most seaward areas. I originally created these on charts and 'transferred' to my now old and still working furuno GPS and now 'triplicated' on to my 'chartplotter'.
The waypoints have been up over the years as I visit new locations and I spend more time picking the ideal spot than adding to instruments.
