You are right about the E/NE wind it generally starts about 14.00 and dies away 17.00 & varies all the time. However if you are on a coastal day out you can shelter behind Isle de Tabarco (old pirate stronghold with good anchorage on the west side with beach) or go into one of the many Marinas along the coast. As you know there are no shortage of bolt holes along this coast. We generally start out fairly early & return late to miss the wind.
yep, alicante is indeed cheaper than balerics, which itself is cheaper than riviera. Mind you what about Leeds, hm, cos that's even cheaper! and about the same as alicante with cheap internet caff tho without the sunshine altho Benidorm is handy....
ok ok... agree about security at alicante tho, helped a lot by a single entry point to the pontoons. Alicante does have the bestest ott marina reception bldg i have ever been to - massev marbled floor, marblee reception desk and swish wimmin all to pay the berthing fee and look at the weather. But you are bang inthe middle of only a moderately-interesting city. Best thing: monastrelli restaurant just one street away from marina.
Looks like everyone thinks JFM is just a flash git who is talking nonsense, let me give you my perspective as someone who kinda commuted from SE of England to France for nearly 10 years and still do about 30 (?) flights a year on the route ... I am not rich either.
1) LON - NCE - usually about 1 hr 30 mins flying time, Palma is more ( 2hrs???? from memory)
2) NCE is consistently well served by scheduled airlines ( IF you live in SEast), Palma is well served in the Summer but by Charter ops primarily
3) Scheduled air carriers tend not to operate 'Dracula-hours-only' schedules
4) As JFM said .. NCE airport a doddle, he exaggerates, if it takes 4 minutes he is walking backwards.. ( despite French immigration), as Magnum said Palma ......!!(another story)
5) JFM continues to get ripped off by NCE airport taxi drivers !! He could get it down to €40 if he found a local who didn't see the boat !! ( But he is right taxis are expensive ) - solution is to buy car down here and park off airport with valet company ( peanuts??) ???
6) Just checked last 10 trips ( all winter), avge return price paid is £98+ ... ( always boooked less than 48 hrs before travel)
7) When I worked in London I reckoned on being at home in South of France about 1 hr (real) time later than if I had driven home. Some times flew back Sunday night but usually Monday morning and still got to work before most!!)
Howver if you offered me the A3,, M25, M3 etc on a Friday evening ??? I'll take the plane thanks ....
yep i had a look around one of these last year or year before. I reckon that as long as you choose materials carpets etc ok then it won't be weird - and they could be VERY weird. Ferreti are massive in this marketplace so worth a look.
Big crewed boats - worth having a look secondhand, hardly used? Or lookatem anyway for idea of what to choose (or often, what NOT to choose)
hot tubs sound great but er yerl need a ton of warm fresh water which won't turn up too quickly and i wd say that on 64 you wouldn't ever be quite sure enuf of smooth water for long enuf except in a marina. Also, of course, careful about buying any boat for "wow factor" - cos whatever you get there will always be summink more wowish next door... So i reckon a hot tub on a boat would not be used very much really...
Er the salesman sound great - without a lot of decks it isn't phyically possible to take a 92 and "duplicate it on 64" as the volume of 92 is about three times that of a 64.
A flippin POUND - you flash git !! My latest skinflinty idea is to have a nice afternoon in Band Q siting in the garden centre and moving from one lot of chairs to the next as if abouto buy them, buiut not ever actually doing so AND you get the pound back from the trolley too! Or even better you MAKE a pound if you find a trolley in the carpark or is that homebase?... Well anyway, last week I found a free (used) tape measure in the trolley last time AND it was a 5m one as well, and not a cheapy one either which pretty much made my day. So don't come spoiling it with all your superior talk about pound notes! That's the sort of stuff that someone in Leeds would say whereas our lot in Bradford, see, well, we're normal.
ah but hardly anyone actually did the trip cept you and a very few others! And specially amongst this lot, well, their time is far too valuable doncha know, even tho it save no time at all the boat can go on a ship, and also it's a er very cold, possibly and er mite put a load of hours on the engines, well an extra 60 anyway ahem. Whereas in fact the truth is it's warm cept in midwinter, cheaper under power than on a ship, and faster too.
I wonder what other reason they mite have for not doing the trip?...
Good God Matt.
You make Scrooge look like Father Christmas. Is is true there are forks in the sugar bowls on the Leopard. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
eh? I have obviously ahem "saved" all the sugar in littel packets from aeroplanes etc . Forks as well sounds dead posh - i will have to give it a try!...
Maybe true a while back but Palma is now well served by scheduled airlines although Nice is still better for late arrivals and departures and better served from other European cities. I would'nt expect to pay more than £100 return to Palma in winter but it could easily be double or more in summer especially around bank and school hols
Nice not so convenient in terms of car hire. If you arrive via Easyjet at the new terminal its OK but if you arrive at the old terminal then you have to schlap across by bus
When we were in LaNap, best negotiated taxi fare was €90 so hiring a car was often cheaper
Flying to the Med is still not comparable in journey time to having boat in Solent. I live NW of London and its average 1hr 30mins to Southampton, less on a good day, more on a bad day but still a lot less than jfm's 4hrs or my 5-6hrs
What nobody's mentioned is whether the extra time and cost is worthwile. Still worth it in my view
The 230 mile drive to Torquay takes around 4 hours and a return trip costs about this much :-
Fuel - £86
Parking - £15
Total - £101 or £50.50 each. Factor in vehicle wear and tear and it's more likely to be £150 or £75 each.
Palma - Takes longer but ace weather.
Torquay - Cheaper, crap weather and 4 hours boring drive.
Of course, all this careful calculation matters not a jot when an hour of fast cruising at 30 knots burns about £340 in fuel with a pair of MAN 1100's (currently about £190 in UK). So in the grand scheme of things not that relevant.
Yes Nice is not convenient for car hire. Solution is dont hire one, or use Hertz gold service qv.
When comparing 4hrs flying to 2hrs driving remeber with driving you have to drive, so uses up your time. With the flight you get 1.5hrs reading/working time. So imho a somewhat longer flight can be better than a drive.
Re your last point, yes indeed the scenery and weather easily make up for the hassle
It is relevant. To put it into perspective we spent about double the amount of money on travelling to the Med last year as we spent in fuel for the boat during our last season in the UK and we did about only 50% of the hours. Add in the cost of Med fuel at nearly double that in the UK plus other costs you would not get in the UK like guardiennage and maintenance and keeping a boat in the Med is an expensive business
Actually, I think I'd rather spend 1.5hrs in my car at a temperature that I want, next to who I want, listening to what I want and with as much space as I want compared to being cooped up in a plane next to some smelly fat yob, feeling either too cold or too hot and unable to read or work because the b*****d in front has raked his seat back into my face. On the other hand you can fantasise about the trolley dollies except Easyjet 'coz they're all spotty kids
