diesel tank connection

The tank is the original Stuart Turner with an outflow through an elbow at the bottom. There was a weep from somewhere which turned out to be at this joint.
The threaded elbow screws into a tapped hole in the tank but just winds down til it bottoms out - this made it vulnerable to the odd knock which obviously loosened it last time.
So what's the advice?
I've got some red haematite but that wouldn't be enough on its own. Recent thread viewed this stuff as taboo but didn't give reasons. It almost held an old BSA Bantam I had together. What's the downside??
I suppose a lock nut on the elbow to twiddle up against the tank bottom would hold everything together mechanically but could I still get a weep?
Any suggestions most welcome, Spuddy

Re: Teflon Thread tape.. nm

Really dont recommend teflon tape for this, as it can degrade in diesel (I know cause I have been chasing an air leak for over a year) Final solution which works is the use of loctite lockseal. - you will probably only find it at a motor factors.

I'd go for a locking nut with a fibre washer, have used fibre washers to great effect many times, tightening the nut energises the washer much more so than any goo.

Ultimately on mine I decided that the best option was to fit pick up pipes in the top of the tank that run down into the well in the bottom, the pick up pipes are fitted in clear polycarb windows that are bolted into place with metal frames (with PEM thread inserts) inside the tanks and with nitrile rubber gaskets I cut myself.

If you let me know what thread the elbow is I can make one if required.
I suspect it will be 1/4"BSP you maybe able to get one at your local plumbers
merchant,he may also supply a fibre washer.
regards Bill.

Had a similar problem with a weeping joint and diesel. Got a little tube of blue gunk just for similar circumstances, made by/for Rolls Royce if I remember correctly, and it fixed the problem instantly and has stayed fixed for a number of years now.

If no other solution quickly bubbles up, PM me and I will find the tube next time I am on the boat.

thanks for the tip on thread type. I should be able to track down a suitable tap from a Dave to make a nut if I can't get one from the merchants.

That is the exact stuff Larry.

Had a look on the boat at the weekend - tube says Blue Hylomar; Manufacturer; Hammerite Products Ltd, Prudhoe, Northumberland; made under licence from Rolls Royce Ltd.

It is a gasket sealant but seems to work on screwed joints and even for fuel hoses just clamped onto a hose tail fitting.
