Did a stupid thing and put a diesel soaked sponge on the cockpit upholstery. Its left a yellow stain - tried Y10, bleach, 'stain remover' etc etc. Will a steam cleaner do the job? any ideas?

I'd try petrol (this is vinyl, not fabric yes?) on a rag.

If you are one of the petrol allergic types, try ammonia - diluted first, then try in increasing concentrations until it works

usual caveats apply - try small patch somewhere it can't be seen to make sure it doesn't discolour - there are so many different types of 'vinyl' it could be made of almost anything

Oxyclean, make a strong solution (almost paste like) apply to affected area, when it's nearly dry just wipe it up, agitate slightly with toothbrush or similar first.

acetone will melt some vinyls, or dull the surface - needs care

a rubber (eraser) like kids use to take pencil off paper. If that works, and it's a big area, try a soot sponge (specialist thing for removing soot marks) Don't use water based products, you'll just smear it around and make ink. ammonia would also be a good bet, but check for decolourisation first

Hi Nick, like you we also have a soot problem, our back canopy and dinghy get covered in the stuff. We tried alsorts to clean it but the best thing I found was non-biological washing powder. Make a very strong mixure of powder and water, lay canopy flat on the floor, pore mixture onto the vinyl and leave it for about five minutes then scrub with a medium scrubbing brush. I was amazed at the results, hopefully you will be to.
