Diesel smell

Pet supermarket.

Buy some sprays of Simple Solution Cat Urine smell remover.

Spray liberally everywhere the smell has permeated
It has enzymes/bacteria, that break down organic compounds, thus removing the smell, not masking it like most solutions, and can be sprayed on upholstery etc

It works, on just about any organic material that smells.

No good for removing vast amounts of diesel, for that you need bilgex or similar. Removes lingering smells tho. Needs to be used liberally, not just a light spray. Also needs several days to work, it's not an instant cure.

Sometimes you won't find a leak - i.e. there is no fuel in the bilge and you don't seem to be losing any fuel but if there is any smell at all, often there will be a little weep around an olive; take a dry finger and run it around all the joins - if there is the slightest weep you will have smell. It is essential to stop all weeps on a diesel system. You will have to nip up the connectors or remake them. Try the finger test (under pressure or with a full tank) and repeat until you have a dry finger and no smell.

Second 'Bilgex'

...after finding the leak(s).

'Bilgex' will keep your bilges smelling sweet - a rinse out every couple of months is sufficient.

Really ??????

Dettol and Glade both do new air purifiying sprays, seem to work well. One is called Nuta air (or something like that) the other is Oust. Spray a lot and lock up for a few days, then do it again may need to do this a few times.

Or you could try the special marine bomb from

Boat smell remover supplier

I bought a couple from here when I had literally galons of diesel in the saloon bilge and they worked. It's a spray that locks on so the whole tin empties. If you get some, cover any polished wooden surfaces like tables. It wont harm them but it saves cleaning up after.

I know it has been said before but fix the leak first then clean bilges and the engine bay with cilit bang degreaser works a treat.

You may have a leak in the highpressure side that atomises a small amount of diesil that burns off on the hot engine and just leaves you with a smell.

I found one by running the engine at high revs and examining with one of those one hundred thousand million trillion candle power torches (very bright)

the leak was just a fine mist that dissapeared into the air instantly but once found easy to fix and smell gone soon there after.

Either that or oocassionally when i check the water trap some goes into the bilge (water trap is almost touching the hull)

Scrub out the affected area with "Zoflora" disinfectant.
It's available in concentrated form from Wilkinsons and others.
Worked well fo me when I accidentally dumped about five gallons of red into the bilges.

Re-used, naturally! Much more environmentally friendly and, of course, free of charge.

The beauty of nappies is that you can mould them around the work area and they work well for diesel and used engine oil. Not so good for spills of new oil, tho'.

[/ QUOTE ]Well those should at least mask the smell of Diesel quite well but I don't think the aroma given off will do much for anyone feeling even slightly sea sick, in fact I think the ammoniac aroma would probably make anyone barf or at least gag a bit.

Wimps can buy new /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Edit:- Seriously, tho', we keep both newborn and toddler nappies on board - toddler are good for changing the engine oil filter and newborn for servicing the generator fuel filter that is round the side, in the gubbins.
