top corner of the transom seems to be a fairly standard place to fit it. I can’t imagine any issues.

Yes, I think that is what I will do, and I will bung the hole when sailing.I suggest taking a loop of exhaust hose to the very top of the transom and then down to the transom fitting. Less likely to flood the heater with seawater in a following sea.
Possibly teaching you to suck eggs, but please ensure you have a foolproof system for ensuring the bung is removed before the heater is lit; I suspect the back pressure will extinguish the heater anyway if the bung was not removed but I would hate to think of the consequences if it didn't.. I don't think that would get past any reponsible health & safety check.The bungs sold for resealing wine bottles after you open them fit nicely in the standard heater exhaust fitting.
