Does anyone have a word about Deutz engines, marketed by Vetus? Perkins have dropped their 115HP engine and Deutz have an almost identical replacement. Regards RPM and weight, torque curve etc.

We had three 200hp high speed Deutz diesels running 2000psi compressors offshore for about 20 hours a day back in the 80's. If the reliability is still as good they should be be fine.

Hi
They are one of the best diesel engines around very old established maker very well regarded in the industrial and plant sector, possibly heavy compared to Japanese standards. Can't comment on spares costs but availabilty worldwide should be good.
I think I'm right in saying they were used in the U boats, time to strap on those torpedo tubes and sink some PWC's !

September Sailing Today lists yacht diesels. Quotes the 114HP Deutz based Vetus engine at a massive 513KG, compared to the Nannidiesel 115Hp at 364KG. The Nanni is also smaller in all dimensions. Maximum revs are 2500 (Deutz) and 2600 (Nanni). The comparable priced 110HP Volvo D3 110 revs to 3000 but is much lighter at only 264KG. The obvious question is whether the extra mass of the Deutz makes for a longer lasting engine or simply reflects older design.
