Denial of Access thread. Can GDPR prevent me sharing an email ?

Some posts are now coming with an automatic need for a street dictionary. I, along with several others, are not from the street talk generation. So please do not use them for clarity of your comments. Other I decide the content of post not worth reading. (OK it should read Otherwise I will decide the content of your post is not worth reading.)

Clarity of a comment is important to make a post is worth reading.

As far as I understand GDPR it applies to PERSONAL data

As long as you redact the personal data, i.e. The name and address and any other personal data, you can can disseminate the letter as you see fit.

Copyright is not relevant as he has sent you the letter cannot retain propriety rights to the content

Presumably any personal data is the OP's own personal data so no redaction is required and he can disseminate that to whomsoever he wishes.

The copyright issue has been well-covered above. :)

All the abbreviations I used have been in common use since the early 1980s, if not earlier. They are hardly "street talk", but the common parlance of fora such as this. They mostly originated in Usenet and have migrated thence. As they are convenient ways of minimizing typing, which may be burdensome on portable devices I will continue to use them.

To help you:
IANAL = I am not a lawyer.
YMMV = Your mileage may vary, indicating that while what I say is true in one place or circumstances, it may not be universally true.
POV = Point of View (which almost certainly predates Usenet).
USA = United States of America (which certainly predates Usenet!).

What plans have you for using all the time that you're going to save, by avoiding all that "burdensome" typing? :D

Copyright is for works created, I seriously doubt if the act can be applied to everyday correspondence.

Where to begin...

Unlike many on here, I am a lawyer. I'm also an IP/copyright specialist and I work with the GDPR and other data privacy issues frequently enough too.

There are a lot of misleading comments on here - no surprise, it's a forum. The OP would be best getting his own advice from a lawyer than on here - we don't even have half the facts (the main ones being what is in the letter).

I'm not going to get into whether the GDPR applies or whether copyright could subsist. These are fairly clear cut points but your strategy in pursuing this matter is probably not best served by arguing this all out on the forum.

Yes, we're very interested to know how this issue goes, but please get proper legal advice where it is warranted (i.e. here). Any half decent lawyer won't struggle with this, and you will be better informed than relying on the myriad of opinions here.

Whenever someone starts a post with "I am not a lawyer, but"... they should usually stop typing before the conjunction.

I use google, it takes seconds e.g. IANAL, including highlight, copy, new tab, paste in google, brought up the meaning of IANAL in about 10 seconds. Easy peasy.

The recipient owns the physical object (just as I own my copy of "We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea") but the author retains copyright of the contents (just as the Ransome estate does). I am not a lawyer, but this is more or less Copyright Law 101 stuff.

At least those of us who state that we ANAL (calm down, moderators) recognize and acknowledge our limitations. It's those who confidently pronounce without knowledge or reservation who have to be treated warily. Dunning-Kruger and all that.

Why should we have to do that just to save some lazy b from some "bothersome" typing?

You don't, you (or any other other 'lazy b' who can't be bothered to make an effort) not reading or understanding a post is of little consequence.
