I use google, it takes seconds e.g. IANAL, including highlight, copy, new tab, paste in google, brought up the meaning of IANAL in about 10 seconds. Easy peasy.

Why should I? This is a forum for all sailors and not all of them know or want to know the accronyms. Text speak has entered our language and is not able to be understood by every forum member. So stop using it.

How do you know I am not on a mobile phone to do a search? That means on my phone I cannot do a search easily without leaving the forum. What arrogance on the part of a poster. That is my opinion and feel it is right for the forum.

I have never heard of IANAL or YMMV and still think these should be written in full characters. I will just ignore most accronums. So I will either ignore the post or will possibly completely misread the posters intended comments. I have better things to spend my time and use my own experiences to comment elsewhere.

God the sooner summer comes and people get back to sea the better!

I'm on a mobile phone. I just long press on the "word" and a pop-up appears offering cut, copy, select all. And... Dum Dum Dum... *Search Web*
That opens a new tab with the Google result. Close tab, original page returns.

I can never remember IANAL but I've read enough forum posts to know it basicay means... I probably don't know what I am saying is true, but will say it anyway!

YMMV I've seen far less often and always end up searching it, then have to figure out if they really meant my millage may vary when the convo didn't seem to be to do with mileage!!!

However... I do tend to use IMHO which, I realise actually adds virtually nothing to the discussion! But if it's ignored the convo should still make sense. A bit like when someone says "no offence intended but..." In a meeting. It is basically saying I know I will offend you and don't give a sh17 so I might as well not have said it.

IMHO = in my humble opinion.

Who the hell do you think you are, to tell other people how to post?
Perhaps we shouldn't use long words or technical boat-related terms either in case some people don't know them and can't be bothered to look them up or even ask?

You can tell there lot of boats on the hard , by the amount of bored people around just waiting to have an aguement .

RAP? What the hell does that stand for? I know what .... I'll Google it.

OK ... it's one of the following:

RAP Remedial Action Plan
RAP Recurrent Abdominal Pain
RAP Right Atrial Pressure
RAP Regulatory Assistance Project
RAP Radiological Assistance Program
RAP Remedial Action Program
RAP Regional Addiction Prevention
RAP Repository Access Protocol
RAP Recurrent Acute Pancreatitis
RAP Right Arterial Pressure
RAP Regional Acceleratory Phenomenon
RAP Rear Area Protection
RAP Remedial Accomplishment Plan
RAP Renal Arterial Pressure
RAP Resistance Against Psychiatry
RAP Redundant Acronym Phrase
RAP Recovery and Progress

So it's obviously medical. Are you feeling well, Vic? ;)

Why should I? ...... .

Your not being forced to do anything, so you don't have to. However, instead of helping yourself, your behaving like a victim and blaming everyone else for your own inability to perform a simple task. If you are too dim to do this, fair enough, you have been given two ways in this thread to help yourself. If you are to arrogant to help yourself, then I guess you will have to live with it.

My phone does look up as well, using the highlight feature mentioned in this thread, so that facility exists and probably on the majority of mobile phones in use today.

Why should we have to do that just to save some lazy b from some "bothersome" typing?

I don't usually use such abbreviations when typing on a proper keyboard; I'm not a touch typist but I'm pretty quick. However, when typing on a phone, minimizing the amount I type becomes a useful convenience.

As I said before, these abbreviations have been commonplace for nearly 40 years - more than half of my lifetime, and I am a pensioner! They originated in the days when 300 baud was a usual line-speed, and when computer storage was measured in kilobytes. They are NOT text or street talk, but part of the common vocabulary of fora such as this, as any search of the Usenet archives will show. Fora like this were preceded by the rather wilder world of newsgroups such as uk.rec.sailing, which several of us remember!

:encouragement:

There is something pleasantly ironic about someone who continually uses the, IMHO correct, Latin pluralisation of forum, being criticised for using 'street talk' by someone who appears to have limited ability to write the English language himself.

RAP is short for Robert (Bob) Pease, god of analog electronics design.
'My favourite programming language is solder'.

So getting back to the point of this thread I have learned something new - I had always thought that something had to have some degree of commercial value to be copyright protected.
It would be interesting to hear from our IP (intellectual property) lawyer on whether the author of a letter has a claim for damages if a letter is reproduced without permission, even if the only loss arises as a result of adverse publicity leading (potentially in this case) to reputational damage or the boat owners receiving advice that may help them in their dispute with the letter writer.

Would it not be easier for the OP (original poster - I think!) to simply state the gist of the letter without publishing the actual wording here - or is that copyrighted?

And yes, with my boat laid up in Spain and inaccessible I am a bored poster!

On the bright side, we now know Jacob Rees-Mogg's forum username.

The thread wander has lightened my day. I never knew some of these acronyms before now. I use abbreviations and common txt words when on limited keyboard of a mobile and see nothing wrong in it. Its easy to resolve or lookup on receiving - sadly unlike unlike the OP original issue which sounds horrid
