Definition of a Classic Boat

> some J class boats were converted to cutter rig to compete

Don't know where you got that from, to my knowledge they were designed with a cutter rig. Also the definition is only blurred until someone comes along and makes a decision - which is precisely what the Classics committee does. We may not agree with them (in fact I do) but since it is their race, it is their call.

I'll take your knowledge as correct on that as I can't now find the site which described the conversion of some yachts. I know that some British yachts were altered to bring them into the J class, but am not sure if that is what was being reffered to without being able to find the site I was reading.

A few years ago I volunteered the services of my boat Ratafia, a 1940 ex police boat, (now owned by DRW ) to bring Velsheda alongside St Aubins Fort, where they antifouled her between tides. She was a fantastic sight, but sadly fell into disrepair at some time afterwards. It was good to hear that she has since been restored and is back sailing. Does anyone know the recent history?

Note the lack of guard rails.

Between my father and myself we own two of the remaining Falmouth 18 footers, Magpie 1898 and Myrtle 1901 which are without doubt classics, but i also race an Ajax, designed by Oliver J Lee and built in GRP in late sixties (like a longer, prettier squib) this is also quoted as being a classic one design. So who knows?
