I have recently relocated to yorkshire and moved my boat from the south west coast to hull. Does anybody know where the nearest deep water marina to yorkshire might be.
Firstly welcome to Gods own Country, and congratulations on your good taste.
Nearest Marina is Hull
Roughly half tide access but main disadvantage is nowhere to go for a day sail other than up and down the Humber.
Sort of marina in Whitby but not very good - rafted 4 boats out and mixed in with fishing boats - nice place to visit though.
Grimsby has a marina in old fish dock - never been there so can't comment on it - very cheap I believe.
Hartlepool - not in Yorkshire - but nowheres perfect - big modern marina all facilities - town a bit wild on a Saturday night but seen worse. Prices jsut gone up but still half South Coast prices.
Hope that is some help
If you go to Hull watch yourself on the Humber its quite a place.
I suggest changing your boat usage pattern and base the boat in Holland or Barcelona (think EasyJet).
The online route map facility at www.theAA.co.uk might prove useful for estimating car journey times to other sailing areas in the UK.
Personally I am counting the days to when I can relocate from a dreadful East Coast town back to civilisation. The quality of life (particularly for a yachtman) in eastern England is in general second rate.
Where exactly in Yorkshire are you?. Several Yorkshire folk located around the Skipton and Harrogate areas have yachts moored in Whitehaven (cost approx £110 per mtr).
Not the best coast to keep a boat, especially a deep keeled one. Last summer while circumnavigating I found that the places to stop on the East coast are few and far between. As others have suggested, there are Grimsby and Hull on the Humber, but both have limited access time and the tide flows strongly in the estuary limiting your opportunities. Also from the Humber places to go are limited, Lowestoft is over 100 miles away and Whitby has very limited access. Grimsby and Hull and the whole Humber estuary are also not the prettiest of places. Leave them to the ships. The marina in Grimsby is in an old fish dock. The docks area stinks of fish and is very run down.
Whitby is an attractive town, but the access is very limited to HW+-2 and a bridge that opens half hourly. Flamborough head against the tide can be a challenge to get round as well. Hartlepool has better access but still has some tidal restrictions. At least from Hartlepool there are places to go, ie the Tyne and Northumbria.
Probably the best place to be based on the North East coast is the Tyne - good access, good marinas and the best part of that coastline. But as also suggested, if you are going to accept that you are going to have to drive for your sailing, then go to the West coast. I sailed from Maryport (just up the coast from Whitehaven) for a couple fo years. It's a trek to get to, but you are straight out into a great sailing area with Cumbria as your backdrop and the Isle of Man and Scotland within a day's sailing. Still tidal restrictions though, but Whitehaven is better than Maryport.
Ive just bought a boat from Hartlepool. £1500 for 35', cf £3870 in Campers.
Give them a call and they'll send you their brochure which lists sailing destinations from there. THere seems to be quite a few, but little under 30 miles. Most seem to be North of Hartlepool, which suggests that a base south of Hartlepool will be nowhere near anything.
Hartlepool reminds me of Cardiff / Penarth 3 years ago. Lots of development / upgrades underway, but still needs finishing off. Staff are great; helpful and friendly.
