Decided to opt out and get yard to sort antifoul

Checking with Yard to day ... found out the price quote they gave was just for the work !

TBH - I know its better to remove all old A/F and have fresh system ... they are talking sand - 2 coats primer - 2 coats hard racing .... 1267 Euros + materials.
But I've asked them to consider smoothing the A/F that's already there and then recoat ... I would remove all next year to avoid building up layers.

Its also that I intend to lift out more than once during the season to power wash off - as we will be preparing ourselves for racing later ... so bottom should stay clean... especially that its Baltic and nothing like UK waters for growth etc.

Coming from the hard school of scrubbing off and antifouling a 60 footer between tides, I actually enjoy antifouling a somewhat smaller boat up on dry land.

With the chief officers help the antifoul painting took 3hrs on Saturday and was good exercise.

Ok - got a deal for total job ... remove old ... two epoxy primer coats ... two coats of racing hard ... 38ft fin keeler ..... 1700 euros all in .. including remove / clean up and reseal keel bolt covers that leak in the lead keel.

Not cheap - but fair I think.

Sometimes it’s just not possible to get a professional to visit your boat...they quite often just simply don’t show up...and every time you call it’s like they are hearing your voice for the first time....recently I tried everyone to get the bow thruster serviced...eventually I did it myself....but although I am happy with the job I did...getting my body into the space upfront under the bed was sooo painful for my knee that cannot bend...but had to. The bloke on the boat next to me still looks at me funnily because of all the screaming he heard from me

You are far better served in the UK than we are here. Basically number of boats in Latvia as a total would less than a small harbours worth in UK !!

Mobos ... long keelers ... fin keelers are a doddle compared to bilge keelers ... I mean proper BK's - not those late Twin Keel jobs that are more like two fins !!
Doing the job on my Snapdragon was made a helluva lot easier when I saw a garage crawler in Aldidl. It served me 10 years or more before the slat got it, and I'm using its replacement on Jazzcat.

I would say that is very fair. Hopefully when they've removed the old a/f they don't find that the gelcoat is soft/blistering - the price goes up a lot if they have to peel the gelcoat and then dry it out in a heated shed before epoxying (don't ask me how I know ).

Nearly finished ..... two coats of primer - two coats of Hard racing ... looks similar to Coppercoat as it has a high concentration of copper in the blend ...

When they removed the line tape - a few places of Red Top came away - you can just see if you look closely .. previous owner left a small pot of the Red on board - so yard will use that to touch up the join line .. as well as the small storm damage areas ..

Very happy with result .. she's smooth as a baby's bum ... wondering how long she'll stay that way !!

Just had a Bendytoy 40 cc coppercoated after blasting 23 years and 8 different layers of antifouling. Keel and hull full reprimed, beautifully faired, just waiting to be put in hoist for bottom of keel and support pads to be finished. My bill is about 3 times the prices people are quoting just for trad AF.

In the 15 years I have owned this boat I have scraped back just the once, when I bought the boat. Since then, never scraped back, or wet sanded. I do go round and scrape off loose antifouling, but that is minimum work. I use an ablative / eroding antifouling and apply two coats over it and two more at the bow, keel, skeg leading edges.

International have a technical note on why this is a bad idea but I am getting two years easily out each application, at current usage rates. When usage increases next year, I will see if I still get two years.

I agree there comes a time when paying someone to do this may be a good idea, but not yet, and it is very expensive for unskilled labour.
