After trawling the depths of deapest darkest wales, in th search for a half competent mechanic, I finally got a recomendation for one, how ever on a prior meeting with him, he said he did not really want any work and could I not just mend it myself. However I had not realised that the phone number given was for the same guy. A very helpfull bloke, dont get me wrong. On this occasion I ask for the engines serviced. He said, I dont usually bother with that, or that, well I suppose I could do, if you insist.

Then there was the email from Conwy marina, detailing the instructions for the exit, and "ingress" of boats. Now I've had an ingress of water, or even mice or ants. But I've never been asked to ingress a hotel or anywhere else. Is ingress not something you dont really want to happen??

Ok I digress. So deciding to do the servicing myself, I enlisted the help of Kwackers. Mainly cos he has shorter legs than me and in any case his seem to work. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Parts duely arived from Keyparts, who had asured me, that there is just one anode. Not to sure, I rang my old mechanic in Plymouth, who said he thought I had three, but could not remember properly.

So anyway we found two, one on the heat exchanger and one on the oil cooler. I'm told there may be another, some where hidden on the sea water system, or maybe on the gear box oil cooler. The oil cooler on the gear box, dont make sence, as it's suspended between two rubber pipes. So wheres the mistery anode, or is it just a myth. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm not an expert on the 41, but my TAMD40s have the following anodes;

- heat exchanger
- oil cooler
- aftercooler
- gearbox

Check your aftercooler.

Cheers,
Paul

Ive got theTAMD41P-A and I was told by a Volvo mechanic that there are no anodes on the engine and it makes no reference to them in the service book - don't tell me he was wrong ! If he is where are they ?

Thanks for the info, will check this out and if i find them I will be suing the pants off Volvo for not putting this info in the service manual.
Think I also will hire Kwakers as expert witness !

Artificial Intelligence is no match for Natural Stupidity.

I’m really curious now so I’ve sent Volvo HQ a mail to ask them , am awaiting reply .
I see that Keyparts quote a cooling system pencil anode and brass anode holder in the TAMD41P-A spares list but if it’s the case and there is one or two there I will be really miffed that VP don’t mention this in their maintenance schedules . Do Volvo mention changing the engine bay anodes as a matter of course for other engine types I wonder ?

Theres nothing in the owners manual about the anode in the heat exchanger of my KAD 42's. My last boat had AD31's with anodes in the heat exchanger and the oil cooler but I don't recall the owners manual mentioning them. Perhaps there's a maintenance manual that no one has a copy of! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Correct its here........ /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyway do these anodes really do anything worthwhile I wonder.
Im begining to wonder how many boats out there are going around with the odd wasted anoded in unknown engine locations .

Its official.
Kwakers has certified my TAMD41P-A as an anode free engine having crawled all over , around and under it today. I never knew he was double jointed !
All I want now is for someone to explain to me why it doesn’t have any.

Resoponse from Volvo to my 'do I have anodes question '

Dear Sir

The 31 and 41 Series engines had a large production period with regular updates to keep up with technology.

Earlier versions had copper nickel pipes in the cooling system which needed protection from corrosion as did the oil cooler and heat exchanger.

Later generations of this engine used rubber pipes and similar metals were used in the coolers negating the need for anodes.

Gearboxes also evolved, the MS4/5 gearbox which may have had anodes was replaced with the HS1 with no need for an anode.

As each version was evolved the owners manual was produced to match its requirements.

Your engine was a later version engine.and did not need the anodes in the coolers and gearbox due to above evolvement of the engine as described above.

Kind Regards

Tony Wilson
