I have found at last a fluid which de-salts bronze fittings with caked deposits that are hard to reach, thought that I would pass on the info, ordinary Domestos toilet cleaner works a treat.

Soak the item in HOT water and squirt in enought to colour the water and watch the deposits dissapear. Have a couple of goes and a cup of tea whilst waiting.

Thanks for the tip. I've been struggling to get the salt deposits of my seized anchor windlass for the last few days. (most successful so far has been very hot water and scraping with a screwdriver)

Have a look at this product, we tried it while at the Ski Racing Championships in Long Beach USA, seemed to do what it said on the can, nearest stockist is in Ireland, should be available mail order from the USA.

Soak it in Vinegar overnight. Also I find that Olive oil pumped through the toilet will keep it clean and lubricated.

I thought bleach was one of the no-no chemicals for a marine toilet - will have to check with the Headmistress.
