Hi all,

After much thought, and a recent illness, I'm thinking of doing something more local with the trailer before heading to Spain. I was thinking of maybe shoving the boat on the trailer and spending a week down in the Dartmouth area? Anyone advise please? Marinas, trips to Salcombe, all OK, what are the marinas down there like and can anoyne recommend any I can contact to book a weeks mooring?

Cheers!

Contact Salcolmbe HM. They have excelent facilities for trailered boats, including pontoon moorings. Be very carefull of Start Point, if attempting a trip to Dartmouth, it can eat small boats.

dont go there anywhere near a Regatta date.. you wont get to the slipway, never mind be able to use it.
In fact the slip at Salcombe isnt great;its alongside the harbour wall, and theres no obvious walk-on/off pontoon to wait at. In dartmouth, Dart marina (I think) has a slip, but its horrendously expensive. The usual option is to launch at the chain ferry slip next to that marina. Needs a bit of guts when the ferry is after you /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif, but check out parking first. You may be able to park nearby, otherwise its 1 1/2 miles away at the top of the hill, and the park and ride back into town.
At Salcombe, it seems to be the harbour mouth where pople play in boats, but it can be a bit lumpy there.
If you can face a longer drive, Id actually go down into Cornwall, Mylor and Falmouth both have top slipways, and the boating/coves/beaches are fantastic down there.Best place in the UK for sportsboats, I reckon.

Hi,

gjgm, actually don't want to risk a slip at all. Want it craned in and will pay for in and out either end of the week.

Thanks, actually thinking of renting an apartment for a week, the Dart Marina has a few that look right over the marina, just checking those out now! I'll need a base for the family so finding somewhere with a view over the marina, pref house or apartment would be super. Starting Point, that a patch of water somewhere? Googling now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Be even more respectful of the bar at Salcombe (where full ebb + onshore gale will eat big boats).

But you're not planning on going out in daft conditions, are you?

We stayed at Dart Marina for a week last year - very nice but the wallet does take one hell of a pounding!!! Supply n Demand I suppose but I did leave feeling very ripped off.

No-one has mentioned Kingswear yet, only the other side of the river and has a large marina and probably slip facilities?

stayed in Kingswear last summer.. well got stuck there! About the same price as Solent marinas. Main problem is almost everything is on the other side, so its either the tender across, or a rather irritatingly expensive foot passenger charge on the chain ferry, back and forward each day. Still, enjoyed Kingswear apart from that.
I'd still head for Cornwall /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Interesting advice...now looking Cornwall /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Any recommendations for apartments looking over harbour/marina where boat is /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

forgotten.. Mylor harbour built some, right next to the marina.. well say 30feet!
Dont know whether thats the sort of thing, but otherwise, there should be plenty of holiday lets around there.. or try the Falmouth side.
Mylor is a bit remote, if thats what you want;lovely spot though.Falmouth has several marinas, naval dockyard etc.. so ...

Yup, I'd second the Fal - lots of places to explore even if the weather isn't fantastic. Then should you get some nice flat seas, its only 20nm to the wonderful Fowey and less to Mevagissy, Goran Haven etc (though a dinghy may be needed). Helford River is right on the doorstep of the Fal.

To give the OP some ideas, this is where we went last summer (click for lager version)

Fingers crossed for you - we had some wind last year (anchored in Helford in 30knots), but it was lovely up the Fal even when windy.

We're heading to Brittany this year (current plan anyway).

Checking out Falmouth then on Google Earth and so on. You guys seemed to like it. Of course, it's all down to the weather, but we have a hot summer coming don't we so it'll be fine...thinking first week in July before the summer madness of schools out..

Ok anyone know anything about Port Pendennis in Falmouth? Nice little place with apartments all round it...that looks perfect...just need to find somewhere to rent in there /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Right next to the National Maritime Museum, with an outer harbour and an inner one through a lock. Often busy - but if you can get it, its a fine place to be. We got stuck there for a few days in 2006 when it was a bit windy:

(Falmouth itself in the background)

If you like loads going on, busy on the water and the best beaches. Choose Salcolme. In any bad weather, Falmouth is better as there are loads of shelterd river to explore, beaches as well, but maybe not up to Salcombe standards. Salcolmes a bit yuppy, Falmouth more down to eath. A hard choice.

Hi Tony,

5 years ago I towed my 18ft bow rider down to Falmouth, spent the week in Port pendenis marina (small boats get rafted, but all very pleasent! we stayed at the Goodwins apartment, overlooking the river, there was room for us to keep the car and trailer there, although the access was VERY tight!!! Think there was space in the Port Pendenis car park for trailers, but best to ask first.

Not sure if they can lift you in there, but there is a superb slipway just round the corner, with pontoons.

Following year we motored down in our 21fter and kept the boat at Falmouth Premier marina, further up the river but again very friendly!!

I'm gutted I won't be able to get back down there for a few years with a boat, there is so much to do whatever the weather, go there, you won't regret it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you want some suggestions of places to go while down there let me know.

Thanks Chas, tried to call Pendennis, no answer.. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Will try again. Goodwins apartment, will look it up! I'll sure be back for advice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
