Dart and Salcombe

We stayed in Pendennis marina a couple of years ago - beautiful, close to town centre and very sheltered, being surrounded by very pleasant apartments. The only down side is the bar - you are pretty restricted as to times when you can get over it. I don't have an almanac at work but from memory it is two hours before and after high tide if you are in the inner marina, surrounded by the flats - I'm likely to be wrong, so really important to check with them, or else you might get stuck like we did.

Falmouth marina is big and sheltered with nice facilities (clean heads / showers and a lovely bar / restaurant - although not overly cheap, the food is great and it has extremely comfy sofas!). It is about a 20 -30 min walk, if bimbling, from the town centre.

Visitors Yacht Haven is right in the centre of town (just next to Pendennis) - so again really convenient.

I don't know about accommodation I'm afraid.

Again, I'd support what the others have said about Cornwall. Falmouth is a great base. Fowey is a lovely little town with great craft type shops (if you are into that thing!) and Lantic bay is well worth a stop off - beautiful beach if you have means to get there. We regularly go down to Falmouth for the weekend and love it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks heaps. I'm finding it difficult to find somewhere in there. There is quite an expensive penthouse type place above what appears to be in front of a small marina/set of pontoons called what looks like "County Wharf". Anyone know anything about that??

I would go to Mylor....

These are great apartments located adjacent to the very atractive marina with great facilities, a good restaurant, cafe.. excellent sheltered boating with lots of destinations including Helford etc....

Check out the apartments and availability...

Failing that I would look at Dartmouth keeping the boat at Darthaven Marina which has a hoist etc... and hiring a cottage in Kingswear... which is lovely 5 minute walk to the Marina, plus a steam train to Paignton (Golf) etc... easy passenger ferry across to Dartmouth town....

We have hired in Kinswear and thought it was great... Tried to hire a apartment in Mylor but couldnt get our dates...

Hi, just been on the phone to them. Initial concern was cottage was next to wine bar but they said its very quiet.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Any views? Also one of the apartments is also free...it looks nice...so you guys approve? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers

Go for it... Mylor is lovely, nice walks, very family friendly, you can hire canoes....etc.etc... Not rowdy or noisy.... would be my first choice!

You'll have a great time!

24 hour access for a shallow draft no problem.... tiny harbour with a speed limit but you are immeadiatly into the main falmouth harbour with no limit (IIRC...) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif And if you go up the Fal it is great, with great places to visit.... highly recomend you get a tender if you dont have one... great anchorage just inside the bar below Trellesic house with a great foreshore and spot for a barbey....

The only thing I would say is that you may want to check the road access into the site depending on the size of you vehicle and trailor.... I am sure someone with knowledge will comment... but if that is a problem you can lift in/out at Falmouth and drive the boat around (15 minutes....)

your gonna love it!

(well we do....)

Ah great thanks for that. It's a 24ft boat, I'm going to call the marina shortly. I think we are going to take one of the flats there, Effingham I think, but I there are precious little photos! I've asked for some more and a floor plan if possible!

Looks like this might be the favourite then. Thanks and keep any tips coming!

LOL.

OK you not a member of the Marina are you? The BBQ area is that to the back or facing the marina, even though there are buildings directly in front I believe.

I've lost track of where your looking now!!! Dart or Mylor??

If Maylor you'll be fine getting the boat down there, ok the last bit is narrow, but I've seen plenty of people towing down there.

They also have a hoist so if you really want to be lifted in instead of use the slip then you can.

Think its accessable at all states of tide.. certainly the pontoons are, not sure about the slipway though.

Sorry,, not that Familiar!!

Spent a few days in the Marina a couple of years ago during a cruise.... had a great time, one of the highlight of the last few years sailing... swmbo loved the place. Feels very personal, great atmosphere. Can be a bit bumpy on the outside of the Visitors pontoon during the afternoon, so try to get on the inside....Fuel available alongside as well as all facilities and services... plus Local ice-cream.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If we are lucky we will see you there!

Hi Chas, yearh flipping, to coin a phrase. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just spoken to the Marina there, very nice, although not sure I want to fork out £278 for a lift in and out frankly! Might use a slip...trouble is I'm effectively on my own because my wife has two kids to keep an eye on, might have to strap them in the car. Is the slip a good one? Ie reasonable incline, needs to be deep due to my boat and the trailer..

Marina seems really nice and they will accomodate us, so it looks like the favourite atm!

You will be able to get a spot afloat...There are loads of moorings and spaces available, we have rolled up many many times at peak season and always have been able to get a spot!

I wouldnt worry about it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have used these booking agents many times for Dartmouth, always willing to go the extra mile to make sure your happy, there are appartments in Dart Marina, some of which are listed in their brochure.

http://www.coastandcountry.co.uk/

An alternative would be to Try Torquay or Brixham, it's an easy 16nm trip round to the dart from either & you have all the facilities you could wish for plus sheltered water out in Torbay (unless there's an easterly wind blowing).

Dart regatta at the end of August is busy of course but then you really need to be there at least once to appreciate it.

Hi Enterprise, thanks for that, had a look at those, I'm waiting to talk to the Marina manager to see if I can get a mooring...they gave me the impression they are annual only but I may have got that wrong!

Maybe they have been let down by folks not turning up to pre-booked berths. It happens often in marinas, mainly because of weather issues and the destination is by-passed altogether, and the crew are more focused on the next port, than ringing and cancelling.
Its the nature of the business/clients, if you call back and offer to prepay for the days in advance, you may get a diiferent response.

I did try that, but lets see what happens. I'm going to call back. Mylor appears to be my favourite at the moment, the marina there seemed very well connected and they appear to be in control of the apartments too, so you get a nice warm end to end feeling about it all.
