Dame Ellen retires from sailing

No more sailing for Ellen as she sets out to save the world.

How sad! No, not Ellen's retirement, but your sneering. Ellen MacArthur is an admirable young woman who has done infinitely more in sailing, for kids with cancer and to publicise the effects of our pollution of our little planet than her (mostly male) detractors could even dream of. No doubt she will do much more.

She should take no notice of the likes of you and I'm sure she won't.

Good luck, Ellen, and good wishes.

She is still going to be sailing for her charity work etc.

If it was reported correctly then good on her!

My brother and I have talked before about how having to carry supplies onto our boat using our small tender and then taking your own rubbish away, really makes you think about saving resources.

Your always thinking about conserving your power/batteries etc and never wasting food and certainly you really appreciate running water at home when you have to lug 20 litres in bottles just for a couple of days!

It would be nice to think in these (hopefully!) more enlightened times that her stance will be fully appreciated!

Interesting isn't it how an innocent little emoticon could be so misinterpreted. I am shocked not sneering. (But I am rolling my eyes at your misguided comments).

But still what do you expect from the 'likes' of people like you. :)

Back to the topic....

You can hear what she said towards the end of D. I. D. on Radio 4 at 09:00 Friday, or on the i-player if you can't wait:

here.

I don't think the BBC headline gives a true idea of what was said (although the wordy bit explains it OK).

I still find her inspiring, despite what anyone else says.

Sounds like you should not use 'emoticons' without thinking first, then don't slag off people if they misinterprete you.

I assumed the same as creek.

I went to a talk she gave in Aberdeen during the early summer- in connection with her charity work. While she talked passionately about her saling exploits - in an under-stated sort of way, she was a couple of orders of magnitude more intense on the environmental front. Nobody in the audience knew it was coming- and the intensity was just a little scary ;-)
If she manages to get people in "power" on board I can see her actually getting some substantial changes made to our generally profligate lifestyles.
A LOT of energy in a small person....

Graeme

A LOT of energy in a small person....

I met and spent a fair bit of time with her when she was on her initial circumnavigation of Britain at age 18. A memorably impressive young woman even then, as well as being utterly genuine and unassuming. Having met her again more recently I was no less impressed. Not only a person of extraordinary accomplishments, but a very good one, too.

The mean spirited criticism, jeering and sneering that has appeared here from time to time, entirely from males who have never achieved anything remotely comparable to what she has done in her short life so far, was nauseating.

Go, Ellen! :)

It is about time she gave up sailing in the way she has done. She's approaching her biological sell-by date so she should settle down, have kids and join the WI. Like any woman. :D

I work with her occasionally...... If you would like I can arrange so that you can give her that advice in person........ I am sure that she would be appreciative.:D

Having met her briefly... I wanna be within range (safe distance mind you) of that meeting too - it would be something memorable :-D

I thought her points on conservation, and it's application on board are well made. Of course, it's not 60 million Brits that need to cut back, it's the nearly 2 billion Chinese and Indians who look at our lifestyles and say 'I'll ave a bit of that'............

It is quite clearly an "eek" emoticon that denotes surprise or shock.

What "thinking" is required before use?

I suggest you learn the meaning of the commonly used emoticons to avoid further misunderstandings :)

Good luck to her,

Looking at www.ellenmacarthurtrust.org at least she is not doing Strictly or I'm a Celebrity and putting her time and "fame" to good use.

Not sure why she has historically had such a hard time on this forum, she is without doubt the most successful single handed sailor alongside Sir RKJ this country has produced.

well done Ellen. hopefully this message will not only ring out for the sailing world but go a lot further. i remembering reading that she felt bad about the number of flights she had taken - i wonder if she will stop these?

whilst sailing can be 'sustainable', it is not necessarily so - particularly the large race yachts that become defunct after a short while or get refitted just to gain an extra fraction of a knot. plus fuel spills, chemicals, rubbish in the water etc.

Good luck to the 'old girl'.

She has given the spirit of adventure to so many young and old people, who had forgotten that it was still ok to do it , despite our Western obsession with academic achievement . Also, the constant bash from the media to make our lives increasingly comfortable and secure so that we cater for our own desperate need for adventure through TV and books.

Pity that general yachting now suffers from this with enclosed canvas cockpits, armchair yachting navigation modules,, no go deck areas, and probably to come, stabilisers and anti roll devices.

We have to fight this .

I know, I'll get me coat...........

Yeah. When the going gets tough..

Well, she's not afraid of a challenge, is she?

And demonstrably pretty good at the 'inspiring others' stuff.

Not sure I would want to sail with her myself ( Motto: Never go to sea with a skipper braver than yourself).

I foresee politics beckoning the very capable and 'grounded' (ie Sound Minded) Ellen and all the better the world will be for that, imo.
