A few years ago (2002) i made a Passage plan for Middle- and South Dalmatia for 2 or 3 weeks in Croatia and was asked by some friends if they could have the route we used.
They knew it had taken 3 months before she was ready (the route…) and seemed to have covered the most interesting places to visit, with some xtra info on each place we visited.
Said a few times i would post it and since Jez needs some plan for Croatia, here we go:
MAP DALMATIA + ROUTE
The route from and back to Primosten but can be changed in any direction as starting point.
We used the Adriatic Pilot as Base
ACI-Marina’s have the best facilities and friendly staff (they always help you on your berth)
Primosten
Day 1 Primosten - Split
Departure from Primosten over Trogir to Split, Overnight in ACI marina Split but awere of the Ferry traffic. Fuel OK
Split
Day 2 Split – Makarska
Lots of nice sandy beaches on this part (not many in Croatia)
Makarska is very nice but avoid staying there on Saturday evenings, harbour is exposed and lots of Drunk (English) Tourists + lots of noise of parties on the tripperboats.
Better is just to visit / refuel and go further to Tucepi wich is a small harbour but well sheltered and very nice beach just next to the marina (looks a bit like a small harbour in SoF),
There are not so much restaurants so book early. For fuel it is best to fuel up in Makarska because you cant fuel-up until Korcula.
Makarska
Day 3 Departure Makarska (or Tucepi) - Loviste
Dolphins !!!
At the tip of Peljesac you have on the northern tip a 4-arm inlet called Loviste wich is very well protected from all directions exempt NNE and there is a very good small “konoba” (restaurant-bistro) with 6 tables, if you want Oysters or Lobster they pick them right out the sea in front of your table… mmmm, the best lobster I ever had in my life…
This is not a marina so there is no electricity (no mooring fees) but you can get tap water in the village. (you need a long hose)
During the weekend there is a cargo ship alongside the pier but its ok to moor alongside it but ask the boss of the Konoba if the cargo is not leaving at night ( we did and were lucky (our German neighbours didn’t… and at 2am…)) the arm in the NW is the nicest of all 4.
Loviste
Day 4 Loviste – Korcula
Be aware of the wind-surfers!
ACI marina Korcula is very nice and has a (saltwater) swimming pool, they call Korcula also “small Dubrovnik”.To me it is nicer but smaller than Dubrovnik, it has nice markets and very good restaurants, only downpoint is the fuelstation wich is out of the marina between small islands) , its always crowded, and 1 hour waiting is not rare in summertime, but it’s the only around…
If Korcula is full you can try Lumbarda or Orebic but both are not as nice as Korcula. (if the weather is to bad and the 3 harbours are full you can always go back to Loviste and moor in one of the creeks.
Korcula
Day 5 Korcula – direction Dubrovnik
100 miles
Along the NE side of the island Miljet with good weather with 2 stops during the day (no poss. to overnight)
Miljet in the N is a natural reserve where anchoring is barely allowed but with lovely scenes and small islets, 2 very nice places are: Polace and Sobra but no refuelling in this area
Dolphins in the N of Miljet often with good weather
Just before Jaklan go in between the islands into the Kolocepski channel wich is nice cruising to Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik has 2 nice harbours, main harbour is in the city center but wild for smaller (-50 feet) boats sometimes you can stay for a short break but they always make you go to the ACI marina, this marina is up the river under the impressive bridge +- 2miles on the right hand side.
Very good marina with fuel and a big sweetwater pool, to get to the city center you have to take a taxi or bus.
Dubrovnik was very nice for 2 days but in 2002 there still was a feeling of the past war and the shell bombings so the admosphere was not good, we left. The second day was good to go and take a look at the old harbour and its beaches (Ploce) don’t go to far otherwise you get into Montenegro and this area is better to avoid close to shore!!!
Dubrovnik
Day 8 Dubrovnik –Korcula
Along SW side of Peljesac with Bora (Heavy wind)
Stay close to the shore with Bora, the wind is not so strong as if you are 1 mile out because you have no protection from the elements between Korcula and Dubrovnik. This side is not so beautiful (no beach, only high mountans coming straight down into the sea) but it is safe.
Day 9 Korcula – Vis
If you don’t stay in Korcula overnight then refuel because no fuel point until Vis.
Vis is the most beautiful island in this area and is only open to public since 1991 (former Tito’s island)
Enter the harbour in the early afternoon +- 14.00 so you are sure to get a good place with a mooring line otherwise its like the big boys boats: on anchor and stern to the quay. But its better to have the line because there is a catamaran ferry running in and out of the harbour and it makes some wash…. You have shore power and water + nice restaurants and bars, in the evening there are only boating people on the island (and some small hotel guests) wich gives a special atmosphere.
Vis
Day 10 Vis – Hvar (with visit to Bisevo (blue cave))
By good weather leave early so you get there before 11.00 (only at this time of the day). Dont go if there is a strong SE wind because you can never get into the cave (swell) . It is worth it!
Take your tender out and go into the cave in the darkness (flashlights!) until 300m further you come in a gallery full of blue light, the sun shines under the island on some christals wich reflect the sunlight back up in the centre.
In the afternoon you go direct to Hvar route S of the Pakleni Otoci islands until you see the city of Hvar, turn left into to the strait (very fast Ferry’s!!!) Try Hvar city harbour but usually busy and swell enters the harbour so better is to go to the calm ACI marina on the other side of the strait and moor in a peacefull place, you can go with the dingy to Hvar or better with the watertaxi. Hvar is a nice city with lots of restaurants & bars.
Hvar
Day 11 Hvar – Uvala Rasotica (no harbour)
Leave Hvar and go around the island N side and visit Stari Grad and Vbroska but return a little bit and cross to wich is the passport of Croatia called “BOL” a beautiful stretch of long beach wich moves with the wind and flow. There are lost of windsurfers here ! there is a harbour just next to Bol (not recommended) otherwise go to Sumartin on the E side of the island, on the other side there is the nicest place of all to overnight called Uvala Rasotica.
Bol
Day 12 Uvala Rasotica to Stipanska on Solta island
Around the NE side of Brac to Milna and then to Maslinca to stay overnight
Day 13 Maslinca to Primosten (passing Rogoznica)
Rogoznica is a new very nice harbour with all fac. From where you can visit Primosten with the boat wich has a nice bay and small city (looks like mini Mont st Michel in France) and has a small harbour.
better with the pictures init (not my pictures, lost ours in fire /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif)
