Hi folks,

Hoping for some help planning October holiday for Myself, wife and 3 year old boy. We spend plenty of time on the water fishing, diving or Channel Island trips.

Croatia is on our list as a possible weeks holiday.

I am thinking Split?? Will there be plenty to do ??
Maybe rent a rib or similar for a day ? Family friendly places to stay / things we must do while there ?

Many Thanks
JD

Hi JD

Yes Split is a good call.

Look on AirBnb for an apartment either in or very near the Diocletian Palace, it's all about location. There are plenty of nice little eateries in the narrow alleys in and around the old Palace. That will put you right next to port/Riva area where you can catch ferries out to the islands for either day or overnight trips, or boat hire within a few hundred metres.

We loved Hvar, staying in the old town itself, which has got a fair bit going on. You might want to mix it up a bit, say, some nights in Split and a couple on Hvar, plenty to do at either location.

Don't bother hiring a car, more hassle than it's worth and travel as light as possible.

Good luck.

Split is a nice city indeed. Not as much as Dubrovnik, but still interesting.
Trogir is also worth seeing, smaller than Split but very typical.
And if you like natural parks, near Sibenik (30 miles or so NW of Split) there's the beautiful Krka national park, along a river with some natural waterfalls and swimming pools, where you can also swim in.
The cruise to reach the place from Sibenik is also nice, along a river surrounded by a steep rocks.
You might be able to rent a boat in Sibenik, but I can't be positive.
Been there 2 or 3 times, but always with my own boat.
In fact, there's also a somewhat hidden but very nice marina up there, called Skradin.

Preko opposite Zadar. You can get a large apartment for about 300 euro for the week over looking Zadar. Taxi boat available to and from the island or ferry. October anywhere in Croatia is not a great month to go, Zadar is a big town so open 24/7

I've spent the last 4 seasons boating in Croatia and tbh, I wouldn't take a 3yr old on holiday to Croatia for one main reason. There are no sandy beaches and if there's one thing a 3yr old wants on holiday its sand. There are of course plenty of pebbly beaches and rocks from which to swim but be aware that there are spiny sea urchins at water level on many of the rocks. The last thing you want is to have to cart a 3yr old off to a Croatian hospital with a spiny thing in his foot. The other thing that is missing in Croatia are water parks, fun fairs and other such dreadful places which 3yr olds find irresistible. One last thing to put you off is that October is what they call a 'transformation' month when the weather changes from summer to winter. We've experienced a lot of rain in Croatia in October. It may be the Med but actually the summer season isn't much longer than the UK
Croatia is a beautiful country with a fantastic coastline which is ideal for boating and we love it there but it's more what you'd call a grown-ups holiday playground. Tbh, I'd take a 3yr old to Majorca on holiday

Thanks to everyone who has taken time to reply. I will Maybe put Croatia on hold for a few years and go somewhere else this autumn.

Plenty of beach time at home so sandy beaches not essential......
