Croatia 2010 , from Pomer to Dubrovnik , and back

This p*sses me off.. I just made a new post saying how I inspired I was by BartW's posts and posted a long trip report from our Croatian Holiday this year .. and the srever ate my text ! .. all gone

I will post the pics and route details and will add text as I go

we did a round trip from Pomer Istria to Dubrovnik and back , approx 1600km's boating in 50 hours

we took the boat from amsterdam to Pomer in 2 days Amsterdam, Frankfurt. munchen, austria , ljubljana , koper pula, stopped in Austria for the night

arrived in pomer where we were kept up all night with very loud music from across the water

did a long stretch , 6 hrs , from Pomer to Prvc Luka , last year we ended in Split so that is where we wanted to start our vacation this year , so we had to make 2 long stretches to get there

first salt water for our 4 month old daughter

nice little harbour the next day on Solta , across the water from Split

we got 'stuck' here for 2 days due to bad weather and visited Trogir

From Solta we wanted to go to the island of Vis but didnt make it due to high waves (uncomfortable)
so we turned around and found the greatest little bay on Hvar where we spend the night looking at stars .. drinking wine.. wasting time

the next day from Hvar to Korcula we saw many dolphins between Brac, Hvar and the mainland .. smoothest water and great boating

and we arrived in Korcula .. the next day we made it all the way to Dubrovnik
its a personal win but I wont do this2,5 week trip from Istria to dubrovnik and back again .. unless I get paid to do it .. it just takes up too much of your vacation and not enough time to site see .. swim.. do nothing

after a few days we went to visit a great little island Mljet .. you can easily spend many days here to explore

until we were chased from Mljet by a thurnder storm making our way to Orebic across the water from Korcula where we spend the night

As we had a meeting set up with friends and cold beer in Mali Losinj we started to make our way up north.. spening a night in Vrboska and again one in our secluded little bay on Hvar

But friends and cold beer were waiting so after spending a night in the Kornati's

we made it to Mali Losinj

and all good things come to end , but we're planning already for next year !

I love that Mljet harbour, called Okuklje, in your picture #12 where you're moored stern to. I was there about 3 weeks ago, berthed 3 spaces to your left. Restaurant immediately at stern of your boat with red logo/sign, right?

Yes, the 'red signed' restaurant is who provides the stern to moorings , FOC of you eat at the restaurant as well, great food and great couple that runs/owns the restaurant

Ah but! You are not moored in one of the red restuarant moorings. The red restaurant guy has painted all his bollards/cleats red. To the left of the red-restaurant berths (as you stand on the dock looking at transoms) there are five berths with big diameter mooring posts, and you are in the left-most of those berths. They belong to the restuarant right around the other side of the bay, 500m walk. Lucky the woman who runs it didn't catch you and insist you ate in HER restaurant! Further to the right, where the quay sticks out3m from the coast line, there are 5 or so big moorings with 3m depth (I have my eye on these for the Sq78) and these belong to the restaurant in the corner, about 100m walk from your photo. The wooden berths ibackground of your photo belong to yet another restaurant; I don't know which one

No worries though. It's a lovely spot and great to get a free mooring in such a wonderful protected bay.

I understand the frustration when the PC crashes while making such a nice thread,
Now,
I prepare mine in a word document, and then copy paste the text on the forum. I'm not sure if others do it this way, or have better way's to avoid having to start all over again.

Haven't you been in Polace on Mljet ?
for me one of the nicest places in the Adriatic,
(perhaps a little too bussy in hi season)

or
Kobas on Peljesac, not far from but similar to Okuklje (smaller)

RJK, some of those pics look v familiar! We are berthed in Marina Frapa between Split and Sibenik. The harbour on Solta is called Rogac and we were moored in there only 3 weeks ago. In fact, rather weirdly, there is a Ferretti 53 moored in your picture exactly where we were but its not the same boat. Trogir we have visited several times this year. We were in Vis only last week and its well worth a visit, especially Kut where there is a good restaurant. You need to arrive a bit early because Vis is on the Sunsail charter circuit and fills up quickly. We also found many dolphins between Brac and Hvar; I dont know why but they seem to congregate there. Where is that anchorage in Hvar btw?
Your trip puts me to shame because we haven't done in one season anywhere near the mileage you have done in 2 weeks! I suppose my excuse is that there are so many places to visit within 30nm of Frapa that we haven't felt the need to go further yet. But your pics have just whetted my appetite for next season. I am especially looking forward to visiting Mjlet and Korculs which have been recommended to me

Now I shouldnt be doing this , but I figure that if I find a ybw forum member in 'my' spot next year he/she can expect a knock on the side of the boat asking to provide a cold beer

this year we have used a cove on the west side of that end of the island, just a few 100 meters from yours, (the other side of the hill)

the 3 previous years we have used that long one that goes deeper in to land, closer to Stari grad,

both are really nice, and my preferred "private" anchorages in the whole area,
very similar to the one you "discovered"

by the way,
Stari grad is nice for a visit, and a supermarket really close

We keep our boat in Vrboska, and when we are there head west looking for secluded bays. In the past, we have found a place to anchor before getting as far as 'your' spot. Looks like we have a new place to try next year!

Can you tell me about the boat, engine, fuel capacity, burn rate, refuelling locations etc..?

I'm starting to feel ashamed about the meager distances I travel in comparison, in what appears to be a similar sized boat, even without a baby on board.

you all make it sound like an achievement.. and to be honest , reaching Dubrovnik from Istria was for me .. as said., I wont do it again in such a short time as we just didnt have enough time to anchor , swim and enjoy our vacation as much as I hoped to ,
but I wouldnt want to miss having done it

Can you tell me about the boat, engine, fuel capacity, burn rate, refuelling locations etc..?

The boat is a Karnic 2460 , really good seaworthy fishing boats (as hopefully Bartw and Maverickofpoole will agree with) the 2460 that we have has a LOA of 8.20 meter , including the approx 0.8 meter swimplatform which is superb to have on a boat this size and as it has a midcabin that sleeps 2 the boat feels roomy for a boat this size

the engine is a VP D3-160 diesel , chipped to 185HP and performed fantastic
with a full vacation load top speed is around 53kmu (28kts) and with a normal load we can reach 60kmu (32kts) however our cruising speed is 40kmu (20kts)

at 20kts fuel usage is 23liter per hour and our total fuel consumption was around 900 - 1000 liter

previously we had a size smaller Karnic (2260) with a V6 gas engine and 220liter tank, that meant that you had to carefully plan stops and basically boat from tank station to tank station for trips like this

Now we have 300 (330?) liters with a better fuel consumption and can make much longer trips without having to plan to stop for days . at 23liter per hour you can do approx 14 hrs or 550 km without refueling and there's plenty of refuelling points along the way if you can do 550km's ! and a good pilot book helps

Thats interesting because there have been one or two threads on the forum about the possibility of doing this. Its v common in the UK to chip turbo diesel cars but not boats. Are there companies offering to chip marine engines in Holland? You have achieved a 15% increase in hp which is quite high. Do they guarantee this increase in hp and what about torque? Has this increased too because that affects acceleration. Finally do you think that engine life will be shortened?
