The missus and I have been looking at a number of boats over the last couple of months and in no small part thanks to help, advice and guidance from this forum we ended up taking the plunge today. :)

We looked at an S28 this morning, really nice condition with brand new covers and really liked the space, layout, headroom (v important for me!) and the fact it came with twin KAD32s which seem to come highly praised by most. Liked it so much that we ended up doing a deal and walking away with a new boat - eek!

Now onto the survey with fingers crossed! I'm pretty sure I'd like to get an engine survey done too. As the boat's out on the hard at the moment I'm thinking I'll get a hull survey done first and then if all ok I presume it'd be best to get it put in the water for a sea trial and engine survey under load? Or can I get an engine survey done on the hard too? Any advice for this stage appreciated!

Thanks, Rich

Congratulations on the boat,i would say leg service out of water and engine service in the water where they can be checked under load,my 2 peneth

Also an oil analysis wouldn't go to waste, we got quoted £100 for two engines, might be a well spent couple of quid before the boat is put in the water.

Congratulations!

We went through the same process and selected a Monterey for headroom and other reasons too i.e. we just liked it :D Your choice seems very popular on this forum.

You will have lots to do now. Many on this forum will offer you lots of good advice. I followed almost all of it and am looking forward to soon being able to move our boat to its new home.

Good luck!

The drives will need to be checked while the boats out of the water, the engines can be visually inspected then, and at a later date when its launched the engines run up and checked from cold start up, and then a sea trial carried out to test leg trim operation, test trim rams and indicators etc.

Check engines for vibration, any smoke, power steering operation, the list goes on!

pm me if you need this doing.

Have the structural survey carried out 1st, expect minor items to come up, and as long as there are no show stoppers, the hard copy of the reports take about 3 days, but the surveyor can normally advise there and then.
Then arrange for the engine/ legs surveyor on a morning and then launch and have the sea trail with the engineer there and then.

Volvopaul knows his stuff.

Hope it goes well
