OK - my first post !

I'm interested in crewing, particularly odd days along the South Coast / Solent, but don't really want to part with £65 to crewseekers !

Obviously it would be dangerous just to post an e-mail address on a forum and wait to see who mailed me ...... but what is a good way of getting in contact with someone who would like an enthusiastic, if not very experienced, crew member ?

TAF (newly qualified dayskipper !)

PS - has anyone else ever typed in crewseekers.com instead of crewseekers.co.uk - it is hilarious !

??? You have a strange concept of the internet, Taf - especially of the sort of people who read bulletin boards like this. Or maybe a strange concept of danger . . .

Maybe putting your e-mail address on a hardcore porn site is asking for trouble - or at least for a lot of junk mail of a nature you wouldn't want your wife to see - but YM forums? Surely not!

Anyway . . . start with the 'wanted' forum here and all the other free-to-post sailing forums on the web that do not automatically publish your e-mail address. With most of them you can arrange for people to send you a private message, which you can then read online.

yes quite a neat site that... Reminds me of when I 1st logged on to the Friends reunited site and typed in error "friends united" and ended up on some swingers site... Bet lots of people did that also...

(lifes never been the same since)..(only joking.).

I don't know about dangerous, but it's certainly a pain in the a*se.

I posted my email on a yachts wanted site about 6 months ago. 3 months ago the flood started and I now recieve 20-30 junk emails a day. (Stop baldness, invest in nigeria, increase p*nis size etc, to name but a few)

Never again (bit late now)

Sites which hide you email such as this are much better.

Having read some of this thread most of it seems to have become a discussion on the internet and your original question has been ignored!!
One of the best ways to gain more experience is to join a club.
Most clubs have regular races, especially in my sailing area in poole and many skippers are only too happy to have extra crew available. Also the notice boards in most clubs have plenty of requests for crew/crewing opportunities on longer cruises.

Best of luck

You will not, I hope have to feel too brave, any club worth joining should make you feel very welcome as a prospective new member. However it will probably be worth your while phoning up first to find out which is the best night to go, when commitee members etc will likely be there.

I found crewing opportunities before having my own boat by registering with the JOG (Junior Offshore Group) crowd. Try http://www.jog.org.uk/main.htm - there are some advertisements for crew, and with a bit of luck and commitment you could have a berth for the season. Lots of weekend inshore and cross-channel races.

As for dubious content on this site - it must be true, because my company is now blocking access to these forums because of "adult content"! Really!
