This is what VicS wrote in response to the photo of the boat that dived out of its slings:
"That's what can happen when you use a spreader bar as wide as the boat. The slings don't grip the hull and out it slides!"
The photo link didn't work, but you can imagine the scenario!
Mentioned to the importer of Malo's that a local marina had put in a nominal weight limit of 10 tons but this was actually about 9 as the spreader beam weighed about a ton. His response was a happy laugh and comment that Malo were built so strongly that it didn't matter if a spreader bar was used or not.
The marina has mentioned that even with a spreader bar the more lightly built boats creak a lot when lifted whereas the Swedish lot and similar suffer in silence.
Having written this I'm not sure it actually helps - heigh ho.
[/ QUOTE ] Sorry about that. It must have been a while ago but here is a photo of a boat in slings on wide spreaders. That one is probably safe enough but with some hull shapes the forward sling could well slide up the bow with disasterous consequences.

It's my boat and I wasn't too chuffed about it ... guy who ran the club was a bit wet behind the ears ... and when I said no way - he said ok - lift somewhere else !! So I risked it.
I was lifting to remove a knackered rope cutter ...
I ended up with Feroil all over mny back stays from crane cables, the spreaders chipped the coachroof when being taken off ... We spent more time getting those darn things in position than the whole lift ! I was only out for about 10 mins before plonked back in again ... we didn't even disconnect slings etc. while we worked on cutter.
I should be lifting my boat into my channel tmrw - 17th April .... photos after ... sans slings /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Oh - here's a few shots of cleaning her ready for it ... (using my old fav's Cilit Lime and Rust remover and degreaser ...)
After degreaser ..
After Lime and Rust Remover (WC CLeaner)
/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Total time to do a 25ft hull .... 45 mins with degreaser / baked on food cleaner .. that got it to clean but that awful brown stain and rust still there ....
Total time with Lime and Rust Remover little bit longer as it needs to 'bite' for a minute or so ... but all in all about 1 hr.
So one days work really ... first cleaner, then L&R followed by water and washing up liquid to neutralise the L&R ...
Tmrw - just before lift she'll have her "Diamond Hard" Polish applied ... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
