Hi,

Viewed a 1998 Giada 29 today in super condition, very impressed. Anybody here got any comments, good or bad, on this model? Seriously thinking of putting in an offer next week if the bank manager is in a good mood. Any input much appreciated.

Cheers

Probably Cranchi's least successful model of recent times, and in sales terms a total disaster. Dealers get stuck with them, so offer ludicrously low. Tested one on Lake Como when they first came out and from memory it was a pig to trim correctly. Can't remember much else about it. Good build quality on most Cranchi boats, and always good value.

Thanks for the reply. As this will be our first boat I definitely don't want to end up with something difficult to trade on when the time comes to move up the ladder. Appreciate it if you could elaborate on 'ludicrously low' Asking price is 65K which did seem a little high, but the boat is in very good condition with a lot of history, nice extras and is ready to go.

Cheers

Mark,

If you've got £65k to spend why not take a look at a Sealine S28? Just did a quick search and found a 1999 one with KAD32's for £67k.

Hi Pete,

We have considered the S28 and indeed viewed a couple. The Giada seemed to offer larger accomodation and I think better build quality for similar money. We also thought that ongoing maintenance would be cheaper/easier with AD31's rather than KAD32's albeit with a performance sacrifice. I've just noticed a 99 Giada 30 on with Crest for 62.5K and have requested details, though I suspect Tom's comment apply equally to the 30.

Cheers

I'd opt for KAD32's unless there is a rellay large price differential for 3 reasons:-

1) The performance sacrifice is a lot bigger than the 20hp difference between AD31 and KAD32's suggests.
2) You may find it easier to resell a KAD32 boat.
3) The extra costs of maintaining KAD32's is not that great. A Volvol dealer should be able to confirm this.

What about a Targa 29?

Pete

Have owned both an AD31XD(150hp) and a KAD32(170hp)...

Maintenance costs are very similar, apart from an extra belt or two on the KAD32, maybe £50-£60 extra every couple of years. Apart from that, the supercharger needs very little maintenance apart from checking the oil level every now and again.

Big advantage is that KAD32 kicks out more torque further down the rev range which is v.useful for keeping on the plane at lower speeds. AD31 was a bit "all or nothing" in that you either planed rapidly or went nowhere. Also cruising revs lower on KAD32, so more restful.

Fuel consumption and top speeds were very similar: bizarrely the AD31XD went slightly faster at flat-out in the same boat (30.5 kts vs 29kts for the KAD32) but this might have been an anomaly (AD31XD was only supposed to rev to 4000, but mine went to 4150 for some reason, and then exploded, but that's another story).

As far as I recall the 30 was basically the same as the 29, so I guess the same comments apply. FWIW, I agree with your remarks about comparative build quality re Cranchi and Sealine, and with other comments here about KAD32s being preferable to AD31s. I wouldn't like to say how ludicrously low to offer for a Giada, but they never sold well and dealers don't like having to take them in part-ex. Make a derisory offer and see what happens (nothing ventired, nothing gained).

Hi,

We looked at these and liked them, just could not find one that was in good condition. We bought a Regal 2760 which is very similar. I like them and they are a lot more popular in the Med..

Good luck

I have a colleague at work who has a Giada 30. He is thrilled to bits with it !!!

Personally I looked at Cranchis (though it was a Zaffira 34) a while ago and although they had some features I really liked, I don't think their build quality is up to the British standard. Just look inside the lockers and you'll see a very rough fit-out.

That said I think you get quite a lot of boat for your money, though you may have trouble selling it in years to come.

A Sealine S28 might be a better option for sub £70k, though personally I would plump for an older Fairline Targa 29 which is a much better build quality than the Cranchi IMHO...... of course, lots of people have a T28/29 so if you want to have something different........ though they all bought them for a reason!

Personally, I don't know how (or why) they do it. Cranchi make some excellent boats at ludicrously low prices. We're big fans of the sports-cruisers, particularly the old Endurance 39 and the Med 50. Stunning value, good quality, and very pretty. The Atlantique 40 is also top value and a very capable boat. Too good to be true? Well, it looks that way but in fact it's just a good boat that has been priced too low.

From David Pascoe Marine Surveyor, Destin, Florida report on a Cranchi Mediterranee :-

"People laugh when I tell them that I kick the sides of boat hulls, actually thinking I'm making a joke. I'm not. I really do kick the sides of boats and that's the first thing I did with the Cranchi. With very high spring tides up to within a foot of the dock, there was a lot of hull exposed this time. I now have sore toes. The day before, I kicked the side of another boat and I was horrified that that my foot nearly went through. A 40 footer, the side of that hull could not have been more than 1/8" thick. I could push it in 1/2" with my thumb easily.

It's amazing. No one in their right mind would consider a house built that flimsily. A boat goes to sea, a house doesn't. Go figure"

Good to hear your colleague is enjoying his buy. Was it used purchase? If so, if he's got any advice for a would be purchaser I'd be grateful to hear about it.

We did consider the S28 but felt we would benefit from a little more accommodation space. The Targa was also on the list, I liked them but the wife was not so keen. She would have preferred the balance of accommodation to be biased more toward a larger rear cabin. The other issue was that they were falling out of our remit on price or age.

We're going to view another Giada over the holiday weekend (a 30 this time) as the model does tick most of our boxes. This time I'll keep in mind all the comments I've received here and leave the rose tinted Ray-Bans at home!

Thanks all for your comments.

Mark
