An elderly wooden boat owner in my yard was about to change the stern gland packing last week end when the chap next to him (known in the yard a know-it -all) volunteered ,since it was cold, to do the job for him . The old chap struggled on and was pleased with the end result and as a goodwill gesture to the chap in the next boat for his offer of help invited him on board for a nip of whiskey. Spanner in hand the yard know -it- all asked if the gland was tight enough and give it a little nip up and BANG the bloody gland nut and thread parted company from the stern tube. Guess who volunteered to fit a new stern tube bet he wished he left it alone now . Technical conclusion------ Looking at the broken bit it didnt look de zinced looked good as new!!
